T1 is headed to the EWC LoL Semifinals, and HLE is headed home. What does this mean for League of Legends esports?
After a lackluster MSI performance, T1 has just defeated the tournament’s winners, Hanwha Life Esports (HLE), in the 2026 Esports World Cup. Even more notably, the South Korean org has swept HLE 2:0 in a best-of-3 matchup.
T1 established an immediate swag gap starting in game one, as Peyz and Keria in the bot lane completely stomped HLE’s Caitlyn pick. This prevented the team’s biggest potential threat from snowballing, halting any chance of a comeback in its tracks. Gumayusi (himself a former T1 player) was left with a 2/7 K/D by the end of the match. Peyz, however, pulled off an impressive 12/0 on Ezreal. The lead only grew from there, with T1 stacking up nearly 10,000 gold in advantage by the twenty-minute mark and closing out the game in only 23 minutes.
HLE’s performance was extremely sloppy, with the team getting caught off guard on multiple occasions. T1, meanwhile, was at the top of its game. In match 2, the roster once again fought for an early-game advantage and snowballed hard. Doran, who performed poorly in the Mid-Season Invitational, may have redeemed himself with a 10/4/9 Jayce scoreline.
T1’s team coordination stood out, and it was clear the org had taken notes from its MSI defeat. The roster was comfortable with aggressively forcing fights, barely leaving HLE any time to breathe. They refused to give up an inch of map space, dictating the matchup’s tempo from start to finish.
T1’s fans have high standards for the organization. It is currently on a three-year Worlds winning streak and holds the most Worlds trophies in League history. T1 is also known for its consistently strong performance at MSI, where it almost always places within the semifinals or Grand Finals. The community was frustrated after an unexpected upset left T1 departing MSI 2026 in just 5th place. In another twist, G2 Esports was the team that sent T1 home: the victory represented a rare occasion where a European team defeated an LCK team from the game’s dominant region.
Hanwha Life Esports, which ended up winning MSI 2026 overall, is one of T1’s fiercest competitors. The team eliminated T1 from the LCK 2026 Road to MSI just a month ago with a 3:1 score. Fans see the EWC development as payback for this loss. In another interesting ‘uno reverse card’ moment, HLE’s EWC departure is a striking parallel to T1’s unexpected fate at the MSI main event.

T1 faced doubt from the community these past few weeks, with many netizens questioning if the org was falling off its winning trajectory. Some netizens were wondering if roster changes were necessary, citing weaknesses in toplane and jungle. However, the victory against HLE was a promising indication that the org is learning from its mistakes and maintaining its play. It also guarantees a Top 4 finish for T1. This puts it back on track for its semifinals and finals streak.
T1 won the first Esports World Cup LoL event in 2024, but fell to Gen.G last year. With HLE eliminated and finishing in 5th-6th place, the two former winners are now the LCK’s key remaining competitors. T1 will face Karmine Corp in the next round, giving them a matchup against a French opponent rather than another Korean team.
The EWC LoL Semifinals will occur tomorrow, July 18, 2026. If Karmine Corp defeats T1, it has a unique opportunity to continue the European LoL rise this year that G2 started. However, if T1 emerges victorious, it will further reinforce its dominance over the scene and continue its winning streak.
