T1 entered the 2026 Mid-Season Invitational as one of the event’s most fearsome teams. With a three-time Worlds victory streak, analysts kept a close eye on the org’s performance. However, European team G2 Esports has now eliminated T1 from the MSI running, and T1 is taking notes. Here’s everything to know.

G2 Esports Eliminates T1 From MSI 2026

League of Legends‘ MSI 2026 has had plenty of exciting moments (check out our list of top plays from Week 1), but the G2 Esports vs T1 Playoffs matchup has fans chattering. G2 and T1 met in the Lower Bracket Round 2 on July 8, in a battle with plenty of history behind it. T1 is notoriously one of League’s strongest and most consistent competitors, and the team has won the past three Worlds all in a row. G2, however, took down the three-time defending World Champions in a 3-1 series, and cracks are beginning to show in the org’s reign.

In addition to marking the first time G2 had beaten T1 since 2019, the defeat is significant for Western League of Legends fans, who have long seen LPL and LCK teams dominate international events. The opening game, held in Daejeon, South Korea, surpassed 40 minutes, with the gold lead swinging back and forth before G2 finally found a decisive fight in the mid lane and closed things out. G2 carried that momentum into Game 2, dominating to an 18-8 kill lead in just over half an hour. T1 clawed back in Game 3, but it wasn’t enough to shift the series in their favor for long. BrokenBlade had some particularly strong plays, playing a significant role in G2’s ultimate Game 4 victory.

The loss confirms T1’s elimination from MSI 2026. The team will go home with a 5th-place standing, significantly lower than its previous performances. T1 has won MSI twice, reached the Final in 2025, and has almost always been a semifinal fixture on the world stage. Interestingly, some Korean fans embraced the plot twist. Fans showed up in G2 colors and cheered during the team’s post-series interview.

T1 Responds

T1 took to X.com to offer a statement to fans, addressing their performance and sharing some thoughts. The organization wrote, “We’re left with regrets for not delivering a stronger performance at MSI in Korea.” However, they reassured their community that “we will use this as a stepping stone to return much stronger.”

The community has mixed reactions to the team’s performance. Top laner Doran and jungler Oner notably had some weaker moments during the matchup, sparking some community commentary. In particular, Doran was consistently outperformed by enemy laners and participated in risky aggressive plays that ultimately cost important teamfights. That said, fans are cheering on ADC Peyz, who held his own and even grabbed a snazzy Pentakill. His performance stood out, and he remained a (nearly) unkillable raid boss in the toughest circumstances.

In a post-match interview with Sheep Esports, star mid-laner Faker noted, “We did lose today, but honestly, it didn’t feel like we lost because the opponent was that strong.” He clarified that T1 “just didn’t play up to the level we expected today.”

What’s Next in MSI 2026?

The MSI 2026 Playoffs stage will continue until the Grand Finals on Sunday, July 12. G2 Esports, LYON, Bilibili Gaming, and Hanwha Life Esports remain in the running.

G2 Esports takes on LYON on July 9 in the Lower Bracket. Eliminating powerhouse team T1 has G2’s European fanbase enthusiastic about the org’s potential. As the reigning LEC Spring Split champion and 2nd-place team at First Stand, G2 has accomplishments to back its hype up. LYON notably swept Team Secret Whales 3-0. This matchup puts Europe against North America. Fans should expect a hard-fought battle between two Western teams eager to prove they can compete with the LPL and LCK’s best.

Meanwhile, Bilibili Gaming versus Hanwha Life Esports will progress the upper bracket. The match will also occur on July 9, with the winning team reaching the Grand Final. Both squads have carried a fierce reputation at MSI 2026 so far. Though BLG vs T1 was a close matchup, the org swept LYON 3-0 in the following round. HLE has looked even more untouchable, with a particularly aggressive and chaotic style. Zeus and Kanavi are popping off on HLE. BLG also has strong players like Bin, so this matchup could really go either way.
