VARREL Eliminates Paper Rex from VCT Pacific Playoffs

Paper Rex has qualified to Champions Shanghai, but a VCT Pacific victory has just escaped their grasp. VARREL has eliminated the org from the running with a hard-fought 2-1 victory. Here’s a recap.

VARREL vs. PRX: Paper Rex Eliminated from VCT Pacific 2026

VALORANT Champions Shanghai 2026 is fast approaching. While the VCT EMEA and VCT China qualifications are set in stone, the Pacific and Americas regions are still scrambling to claim the tournament’s few remaining spots.

On August 29, Paper Rex and VARREL met on the Playoffs lower-bracket battlefield. VARREL defeated PRX 2-1 after several close matches, delivering a surprise upset to the analyst favorite team and eliminating them from Pacific Stage 2. Let’s recap the matchup and explore what it means for the orgs.

Map 1: Lotus

Map 1, Lotus, was a PRX pick. The team opted for a double-Controller, double-Duelist, no-Sentinel comp. This influx of push utility theoretically put VARREL, who opted for a solo Sentinel, in a tough position. However, PRX wasn’t counting on oonzmlp being an absolute monster on Vyse, dropping a 17/10 scoreline and defending his sites like his life depended on it. VARREL first fought valiantly on the Attacker side, but things were quite close and they ended the half 7-5. Defender was where they really set the victory in stone, only granting PRX one additional round and thwarting their push attempts before they could even plant. Ultimately, VARREL stomped PRX 13-6 on their home turf.

Map 2: Split

Split followed as VARREL’s map selection. This map was much, much closer, closing out with a narrow PRX win at a 15-13 overtime score. Both halves were 6:6; the teams were extremely evenly matched and carried on the games neck-and-neck.

Despite this tied performance, we can still identify some standouts. zexy and Foxy9 were VARREL’s carries, consistently pulling the roster to another round and another chance to win despite poorer team performances. Meanwhile, PRX invy impressed on Fade, diffing opponents while Jinggg’s raze got much-needed frags. The aggressive Initiator-Duelist combo was the deciding factor in Overtime, as PRX’s successful attacks brought them over the edge to victory.

Map 3 (Decider): Sunset

Decider map Sunset was another close game. VARREL C1ndeR had performed poorly on Omen for the first two matchups, so the team swapped him out for Klaus. Notably, Klaus played quite well, holding his own with a 10-13 K/D and grabbing plenty of assists along the way.

Once again, the first half ended at a 6:6 even standing. Foxy9 almost dropped 30 on Chamber, and his frags were hugely impactful for VARREL. Meanwhile, Jinggg’s Raze kept PRX’s fight going, though the team ultimately fell. VARREL clutched this one 13-10, securing a 2-1 overall win.

What Does This Mean for the Teams?

Paper Rex has already qualified to Champions Shanghai 2026 through Champions Points, but its Stage 2 exit will halt its chances to reach the tournament’s top placements. PRX goes home in 5th-6th place, taking with them 10,000 USD, but not a trophy.

The team’s well-known rival, DRX, faced an earlier elimination. They will not qualify for Champions for the first time in four years, marking a slight point of victory for PRX fans.

After the win against PRX, VARREL will continue its VCT Pacific 2026 run by facing off with T1 in the lower bracket semifinals. The top two teams in VCT Pacific will qualify to Champions 2026. If VARREL can survive two more matchups and climb its way to the Grand Finals, it has a fighting chance.
