Three numbers decide the value of a betting offer: the minimum odds on the qualifying bet, any wagering on the bonus, and the expiry. A free bet with no wagering is worth close to its stake times your strike rate; a bonus that must be rolled over five times on accumulators is worth a fraction.

How free bets pay

A €10 free bet at odds of 3.00 returns €20 if it wins, not €30, because the stake isn't returned. That's why longer odds get more value out of a free bet.

Working out an offer's value

A bet-and-get offer of €30 in free bets for a €10 qualifying bet at minimum odds of 1.50: the qualifying bet costs you its margin (about 5%, or €0.50), and three €10 free bets at odds around 3.00 are each worth about €6.50 on average after margin. Total value: roughly €19. Offers with wagering on winnings are worth less.

Ongoing offers

Best odds guaranteed on racing is the most valuable ongoing offer for Irish punters: it costs nothing and pays the starting price when it beats the price you took. Acca insurance and price boosts have value only if you'd make those bets anyway.

The terms that decide what a free bet is worth

TermWhat it meansWhy it matters
Stake not returnedA winning free bet pays the profit only, not the free-bet stakeCuts the value compared with a cash bet
Minimum oddsThe qualifying bet or the free bet must be at or above set odds, often 1/2 or evensRules out the safest selections
Qualifying betThe cash bet you must place firstIts expected loss is part of the offer's cost
ExpiryFree bets usually lapse within 7 daysUnused free bets are worth nothing
Payment exclusionsSome offers exclude e-wallet depositsCheck before depositing with PayPal or Skrill
One per householdOne offer per person, address, device or payment methodOpening a second account voids it

What a €10 free bet is really worth

Because the stake is not returned, a free bet is worth more at longer odds. With a typical bookmaker margin of about 5%, the expected value of a €10 stake-not-returned free bet is roughly:

Odds (decimal)Return if it winsApproximate expected value
2.0 (evens)€10€4.75
3.0 (2/1)€20€6.33
5.0 (4/1)€40€7.60
10.0 (9/1)€90€8.55

The wider the odds, the closer the free bet gets to its face value, at the cost of winning far less often. Neither choice changes the fact that the qualifying bet has its own expected loss, so a "bet €10 get €30" offer is worth the free bets minus a little under a euro of expected loss on the qualifier.

Acca insurance and price boosts

Acca insurance refunds your stake, usually as a free bet, when one leg of an accumulator loses. It has real value, but accumulators carry the bookmaker's margin on every leg, so a five-fold at 5% per leg carries a combined margin above 20%. Price boosts lift the odds on a chosen selection; compare the boosted price with other bookmakers' prices before treating it as value.

Esports offers in Ireland

Irish bookmakers run fewer esports-specific offers than football or racing promotions, but boosts and bet builders on CS2, League of Legends and Valorant majors are increasingly common, and free bets from a sign-up offer can normally be used on esports markets. Check the minimum odds, since map and round markets are often short-priced. Our esports betting guide covers markets and margins.

Offers, multiple accounts and restrictions

Bookmakers limit offers to one per person and can void winnings if they believe offers are being abused, for example through multiple accounts. They can also restrict accounts that take only promotional prices. Read the general promotional terms as well as the offer itself, and expect promotions to narrow as the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland sets rules on inducements under the 2024 Act.

Offers and the 2024 Act

The Gambling Regulation Act 2024 restricts inducements to open an account or bet, and the GRAI will set the detailed rules. Expect fewer and simpler sign-up offers from licensed bookmakers as the regime takes effect.

Racing offers explained

Extra places: more each-way places than standard on selected races, so a horse finishing fifth might still pay. Non-runner no bet: your stake is returned if your horse doesn't run, mostly on ante-post markets. Money back if second: a refund as a free bet if your horse finishes second, on selected races.

How offers will change under the GRAI

The 2024 Act restricts inducements, and the GRAI will set detailed rules on what licensed bookmakers can offer. Expect simpler sign-up offers and fewer aggressive promotions as the regime takes effect.

Questions

Are free bets real money?
Free bet winnings are paid as cash; the stake isn't returned.
What is best odds guaranteed?
If the starting price is bigger than the price you took, you're paid at the starting price.
Can I use free bets on esports?
Depends on the bookmaker; some offers exclude esports. Check the terms.
What are extra places?
More each-way places than standard on selected races, so a horse finishing outside the normal places can still pay.
What does stake not returned mean?
A winning free bet pays only the profit, not the free-bet stake, which is why free bets are worth less than cash bets of the same size.
Is it better to use a free bet at long odds?
Expected value is higher at longer odds because the stake is not returned, but you will win less often.
