Betting well isn't about picking winners. It's finding prices that pay more than the real chance and staking so variance doesn't wipe you out.

How odds work

Decimal odds of 2.00 imply a 50% chance; 4.00 implies 25%. Fractional odds of 3/1 equal decimal 4.00. Add the implied probabilities of every outcome and the total exceeds 100%; the excess is the bookmaker's margin.

2.00Evens50%
3.002/133.3%
5.004/120%

Finding value

A bet has value when the odds are higher than the true probability justifies. If you think a team wins 55% of the time and the odds are 2.00 (50%), the bet has value. Over hundreds of bets, only the accuracy of your estimates against the market matters. Taking the best price across bookmakers improves returns with no extra analysis.

Match winner is the simple bet. Map handicaps get a better price on the favourite. Totals suit close series. First blood, pistol rounds and player props are priced less carefully, which is where watching the game pays off.

Accumulators

Each leg multiplies the margin as well as the odds: a five-leg acca carries roughly five times the margin of a single. Use them for fun, not value, unless every leg is a value bet on its own.

Each-way racing maths

An each-way bet is two bets: one to win, one to place. With 1/5 odds for three places, a 10/1 horse pays 2/1 for a place. Each way has value when the place part is generous relative to the field: large handicaps paying extra places are where it works best.

Bankroll and records

Set a betting bank, stake 1–2% per bet, never chase losses, and record every bet with date, market, odds, stake and result. After a hundred bets you'll see where you win and where you don't. Problem Gambling Ireland: 089 241 5401.

Reading racing form

Recent form figures, the going, the trip, the draw and the jockey-trainer combination all feed into a horse's chance. A horse with good form on soft ground may struggle on fast ground; check the going report on race day.

GAA betting basics

Championship matches attract the most markets: match result, handicap, total points and first scorer. Handicap betting is popular because many GAA matches have clear favourites; the handicap levels the price.

Common mistakes

  • Chasing losses with bigger stakes.
  • Building long accumulators for the price.
  • Betting on your county or club instead of value.
  • Ignoring better prices at other bookmakers.
  • Not keeping records.

Understanding closing line value

Closing line value means taking a better price than the final odds before a match starts. If you consistently beat the closing line, your bets are likely to be good value even when individual results go against you. Compare the odds you took with the closing odds on a sample of your bets.

Betting and responsible play in Ireland

Set a bankroll you can afford to lose, stake 1–2% of it per bet, and never chase losses. Use deposit limits and the national exclusion register being set up under the 2024 Act if you need a break. Help is available from Problem Gambling Ireland on 089 241 5401.

Reading odds and finding the margin

Fractional odds of 5/2 mean €5 profit for every €2 staked; decimal odds of 3.50 mean a €1 stake returns €3.50. The implied probability is 1 divided by the decimal odds, so 3.50 implies 28.6%. Add the implied probabilities of every outcome in a market: anything above 100% is the bookmaker's margin.

2.203.503.60101.8%1.8%

Value and closing odds

A bet has value when your estimate of the probability is higher than the bookmaker's implied probability. One practical test of your judgement over time is whether the odds you take are better than the odds just before the event starts. Regularly beating that closing price is a sign your selections have an edge.

Staking

Flat staking, betting the same small share of your bankroll each time, keeps a losing run from wiping you out. A common rule is 1–2% of your betting bankroll per bet.

Questions

Is there a winning betting strategy?
No guaranteed one. Value betting, best prices and disciplined staking improve results.
Are accumulators good value?
Rarely. The margin compounds with each leg.
How does each way work?
Half your stake backs the win, half backs a place at a fraction of the odds.
How do I bet on GAA?
Match result, handicap, total points and scorer markets are offered on championship matches; handicaps are popular when there's a clear favourite.
How do I calculate the bookmaker's margin?
Add 1 divided by the decimal odds for every outcome; the amount above 100% is the margin.
