How we score
Ireland races almost every day of the year across 26 racecourses, with National Hunt racing through the winter and the Flat in summer. The biggest meetings are Leopardstown at Christmas and in February, Cheltenham and Punchestown in spring, and the Galway Festival in July.
How we rank bookmakers
We rank bookmakers licensed for Irish customers on the range and depth of markets, prices on the same events, payment options and withdrawal times, app quality and responsible gambling tools. Ratings run from 5.0 for the top-ranked bookmaker in even steps down the list. Offers are the bookmakers' stated terms.
Markets explained
| Bet | What you bet on |
|---|---|
| Win | Your horse finishes first |
| Each way | A win bet and a place bet; the place pays a fraction of the odds |
| Forecast | First and second in order |
| Tricast | First, second and third in order |
| Lucky 15 | 15 bets on four selections: singles, doubles, trebles and a fourfold |
| Ante-post | Bets placed days or weeks before a big race |
How the odds work
Irish bookmakers show fractional and decimal odds. 5/2 equals 3.50 in decimal: a €10 bet returns €35, including your stake. To compare bookmakers, add the inverse of the decimal odds across a market; the closer the total is to 100%, the lower the margin. On horse racing, the "overround" across a whole field is often 110–130%.
Each-way terms
Each-way terms depend on the number of runners and the type of race: typically 1/4 of the odds for the first three in handicaps of 8–11 runners, and 1/4 for the first four in handicaps of 16 or more. Many bookmakers offer extra places on big races. Compare each-way terms as well as odds.
Best odds guaranteed
With best odds guaranteed, if you take a price and the starting price is bigger, you are paid at the starting price. It is one of the most valuable features for racing punters; check the qualifying races and maximum payouts.
Betting tax and regulation in Ireland
Irish bookmakers pay a 2% betting duty on stakes, which they usually absorb rather than deducting from your bet. Online bookmakers serving Ireland must hold a licence; the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI) is taking over licensing and supervision under the Gambling Regulation Act 2024. Winnings are not taxed for Irish punters.
Responsible betting
Set a budget and deposit limits, take breaks and never chase losses. Free, confidential support is available from Gamblers Anonymous Ireland and the HSE drug and alcohol helpline on 1800 459 459.
Best odds guaranteed and early prices
Many Irish bookmakers offer best odds guaranteed on selected races: take an early price and, if the starting price is bigger, you're paid at the starting price. Early prices are published the evening before for big meetings; they can be bigger than the market on the day, but non-runners lose unless the race is non-runner no bet. Combining an early price with best odds guaranteed gives you the better of the two.
Irish racing calendar
| Period | Key meetings |
|---|---|
| Late December | Leopardstown Christmas Festival |
| February | Dublin Racing Festival (Leopardstown) |
| April | Fairyhouse (Irish Grand National), Punchestown Festival |
| May–September | Flat season, including the Curragh Classics |
| Late July | Galway Races |
| September | Irish Champions Festival |
Ground and why it matters
| Going | Effect |
|---|---|
| Heavy, soft | Stamina matters; fewer horses act on it |
| Good to soft, good | Most horses are comfortable |
| Good to firm, firm | Speed matters; some trainers withdraw horses |
Check each horse's form on similar ground; a horse that has only won on soft ground is a riskier bet on fast going.
Responsible racing betting
Racing runs almost every day, which makes it easy to bet too often. Set a weekly budget, keep stakes level and use deposit limits in your account. Free support is available from Gamblers Anonymous Ireland and the HSE helpline on 1800 459 459.
Reading a racecard
| Item | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Form figures | Recent finishing positions, latest on the right |
| Weight | Weight carried; higher in handicaps for better horses |
| Official rating | The handicapper's rating of the horse |
| Draw | Starting stall on the Flat; matters on some tracks |
| Going | Ground conditions the horse has handled |
| Trainer and jockey | Current form of the yard and rider |
Combining recent form with the going and distance is the simplest way to narrow a field.
Multiples for racing
Doubles, trebles and system bets such as the Lucky 15 combine selections across races. A Lucky 15 covers four horses with 15 bets, so one winner still returns something, and many bookmakers pay bonuses or odds boosts on it. Each extra selection increases the cost and lowers the chance that everything wins.
