How we score
The GAA calendar runs from the National Leagues in spring through the provincial championships to the All-Ireland finals in July. Betting peaks from May to July, when championship games are played most weekends.
How we rank bookmakers
We rank bookmakers licensed for Irish customers on the range and depth of markets, prices on the same events, payment options and withdrawal times, app quality and responsible gambling tools. Ratings run from 5.0 for the top-ranked bookmaker in even steps down the list. Offers are the bookmakers' stated terms.
Markets explained
| Market | What you bet on |
|---|---|
| Match result | Win, draw or win |
| Handicap | Result with a points start for the underdog |
| Total points | Over or under a set total (a goal counts three points) |
| Top scorer | Player with the most scores |
| Half-time / full-time | Leader at half-time and winner at full-time |
| Outrights | All-Ireland and provincial winners |
How the odds work
Irish bookmakers show fractional and decimal odds. 5/2 equals 3.50 in decimal: a €10 bet returns €35, including your stake. To compare bookmakers, add the inverse of the decimal odds across a market; the closer the total is to 100%, the lower the margin. On horse racing, the "overround" across a whole field is often 110–130%.
GAA betting tips
- Know the scoring: a goal is worth three points, so totals move quickly.
- Check team news released on Friday evenings and late changes before throw-in.
- Draws happen: the three-way market prices them in; handicaps avoid them.
- Home advantage matters more in provincial games than at Croke Park.
- Outrights carry higher margins than match bets.
Betting tax and regulation in Ireland
Irish bookmakers pay a 2% betting duty on stakes, which they usually absorb rather than deducting from your bet. Online bookmakers serving Ireland must hold a licence; the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI) is taking over licensing and supervision under the Gambling Regulation Act 2024. Winnings are not taxed for Irish punters.

GAA scoring and how it affects betting
In both football and hurling, a goal is worth three points and a point is worth one, with two-point scores from outside the arc now part of football. Hurling produces much higher totals than football, often 45 to 60 combined scores against 30 to 40. That's why handicaps in hurling are wider and totals move more with weather: wind at one end of the ground can decide a half.
Common GAA markets compared
| Market | Football | Hurling |
|---|---|---|
| Typical total | Lower | Higher |
| Handicap range | Smaller | Wider |
| Draw probability | Higher | Lower |
| Top scorer | Free-takers dominate | Free-takers dominate |
Top-scorer markets usually favour the free-taker, because frees account for a large share of a player's tally. Check who is taking frees on the day; a change of free-taker changes the market.
The GAA season
| Months | Competition |
|---|---|
| January–March | National Leagues |
| April–June | Provincial championships and round-robin stages |
| June–July | All-Ireland series and finals |
| Autumn–winter | Club championships |
Reading team news
Counties name teams late and change them often, sometimes after the official team is announced. A late swap of a key forward or goalkeeper can move the handicap. Wait for the confirmed team where you can, and be wary of betting early on handicaps for games where team news is unclear.
GAA betting glossary
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Handicap | Points start given to the weaker team |
| Two-pointer | Football score from outside the arc |
| Free-taker | Player who takes frees; usually leads top-scorer markets |
| Round robin | Group stage where teams play each other once |
Championship formats
Both codes run provincial championships followed by All-Ireland series. In football, the top teams go into the Sam Maguire Cup, with the Tailteann Cup for the rest; in hurling, the Leinster and Munster round-robins feed the Liam MacCarthy Cup. Round-robin stages mean some games matter more to one side than the other, which affects prices and team selection.
Club and county
Club championships run in the autumn and winter after the inter-county season. Bookmakers cover the bigger club games and the All-Ireland club finals at Croke Park, usually with fewer markets and higher margins than county games.
How GAA odds move
Prices react to team news more than in most sports, because counties name teams late and changes are common. Watch for the official team on the Friday evening and the team-sheet before throw-in. Weather also matters in hurling and football: wind and rain lower scoring and make handicaps harder to cover.
