An upgrader takes a skin or balance and gives you a chance to receive a higher-value skin. Pick the target, the site shows the chance, you spin. Win and you get the target; lose and the stake is gone.

The maths

Without an edge, chance equals stake value divided by target value: a $10 skin aimed at a $20 skin would be 50%. Sites reduce that chance slightly; the reduction is the edge. A site showing 47.5% for that upgrade has a 5% edge.

How skin upgraders work, step by step

1. Choose the skin (or balance) you want to stake from your inventory. 2. Pick a target skin worth more than your stake, or set a multiplier on sites that allow it. 3. The site shows your chance of winning, calculated from the value ratio minus its edge. 4. Spin. A provably fair roll decides whether the result lands in the winning range. 5. Win and the target skin replaces your stake; lose and the stake is gone.

Most upgraders display the roll as a ring or bar with your winning zone highlighted. The animation is decoration: the result is fixed by the server seed, client seed and nonce before it plays.

Picking a multiplier

The multiplier is the single biggest decision on an upgrader, because it sets how often you win and how big each win is.

MultiplierWins roughlyTypical use
1.2x–1.5x2 in 3 rounds or betterSmall, steady steps up
2xJust under halfThe balanced default
5xAbout 1 in 5Aiming at a specific skin
10x+1 in 10 or lessLottery-style shots

Over many upgrades every multiplier carries the same edge, so the choice changes how bumpy the ride is, not the expected result. Low multipliers lose slowly through many small edge payments; high multipliers lose fast or win big.

The chained-upgrade trap

A common habit is to win an upgrade and immediately upgrade the new skin again. Each step multiplies the edge: five chained 2x upgrades at a 5% edge leave you with roughly a 2.5% chance of success instead of the 3.1% a fair game would give, and the losses compound the same way. If you upgrade at all, decide in advance how many steps you'll take and cash out or withdraw when you hit them.

How to verify an upgrade

After rotating your seeds, copy the revealed server seed, your client seed and the upgrade's nonce into the site's verifier. The resulting roll should fall inside the winning range shown for that upgrade if you won, or outside it if you lost. Our guide to how case opening works walks through provably fair verification in more detail.

Upgrader mistakes to avoid

  • Chasing a loss with a higher multiplier.
  • Upgrading skins you'd rather keep; sell or withdraw them first.
  • Ignoring the shown chance and judging by the animation.
  • Upgrading on a site with no public seeds; without them the chance shown can't be checked.

When an upgrader makes sense

An upgrader is the most direct way to aim at a specific skin. If you want a particular knife and have skins you don't care about, one upgrade at a moderate multiplier is a clearer bet than opening dozens of cases that might contain it. It's a poor tool for "growing" a balance, because every spin carries the edge.

Questions

How do I calculate an upgrader's edge?
Divide stake value by target value for the fair chance, then compare it with the chance the site shows.
Which upgrader is best?
Clash.gg showed the lowest edge on the chances displayed.
What multiplier should I use on an upgrader?
There's no best multiplier for expected value; every multiplier carries the same edge. Lower multipliers give steadier results, higher ones bigger swings.
Are skin upgraders rigged?
On provably fair sites the roll is fixed by seeds before each spin and can be verified afterwards. The edge is visible in the chance shown.
Is chaining upgrades a good idea?
Generally not. Each step adds the edge again, so chains fail far more often than they feel like they should.
When does an upgrader make sense?
When you want a specific skin and have skins you don't mind risking; it's a poor way to grow a balance.
