VCT CN teams are playing on their home turf in Champions Shanghai, but the storylines are heating up as the region hasn’t won a single Group Stage map yet. Let’s recap the situation.
VALORANT Champions 2026 is in full swing, and time flies when you’re getting frags. We’re already almost through the Group Stage, and the top four teams from each region are battling it out to see who’s the strongest.
Though the tournament still has a ways to go, Champions Shanghai viewers are noticing a trend: so far, VCT CN teams haven’t won a single match, or even a single map.
As of September 27, the region sits at a 0-4 record. In the Opening Matches, FUT swept JDG 2-0. LOUD then 2-0’d EDward Gaming, and G2 Esports defeated TYLOO 2-0. Karmine Corp followed, dealing another 2-0 to XLG.
Every single VCT CN team is tied for last place on the leaderboard and headed to an elimination match. EDG’s next battle places them against Global Esports, the first seed in VCT Pacific.

This is particularly unexpected because Champions 2026 marks an important moment in VALORANT history. While Masters Shanghai 2024 brought VALORANT’s international events to China, Champions Shanghai is the first time the game’s most important tournament is entering the region. VCT CN fans have high expectations for their favorite teams to perform on their home turf.
What happens next? There’s no telling. Anything is possible in VCT, and the teams could definitely have a comeback. However, the current standings have the community abuzz.
VALORANT added the VCT China region in 2023, three years after the game’s launch and two years after its first-ever Champions. Despite this late start, VCT CN caught worldwide attention fast. Players like zmjjKK, nobody, Knight, and CHICHOO became household names among esports fans. Orgs like Bilibili Gaming and EDward Gaming (EDG) found success on the international stage.
All this reached a peak a year later, when EDG won VALORANT Champions 2024. The team’s rapid rise and unexpected power caught opponents off-guard, and for a while, it seemed like VCT China was the scene’s fiercest competitor.
In 2025, however, EDG’s performance started to slip. They notably placed near the bottom of Champions. VCT CN has struggled throughout 2026, though EDG saw a bright spot with its Masters London 3rd placement. DRG, XLG, JDG, TYLOO, AG, and other orgs have trailed near the bottom of the season’s power rankings. There’s still plenty of time left for things to change, but the Champions Shanghai Group Stage is not a strong start.
EDG’s head coach Autumn spoke to interviewers from Ult Orb, reportedly saying VCT China is “relatively weak compared other regions” in 2026.
Autumn said he believed the region’s results stemmed from being behind in the meta. “Right now […] Neon, Yoru, and Chamber are all being used a lot again, and with that meta returning, I think our players are still a bit weaker compared to other regions, so I think that’s why we’re getting these results.”
Indeed, Chinese Valorant teams have a distinct aggressive and unpredictable playstyle from other VCT regions. VCT CN teams often favor swift and decisive pushes, forcing opponents into uncomfortable positions early in rounds, and catching slower, more methodical squads off guard. They set up situations for individual players with strong raw mechanics to thrive. The region is also less afraid to experiment with unconventional agent picks, surprising opponents.
Originally, this setup was the perfect counter to practiced teams going on autopilot. However, the Neon, Yoru and Chamber meta refuses to let VCT CN set the tempo and matches early aggression, which is the playstyle’s primary strength.
In addition, Autumn noted that the current meta doesn’t favor VCT CN’s map pool:
“London was almost the only meta where Yoru and Neon couldn’t really be used. In that meta, we were actually a team with an advantage in terms of map pool and other strengths. I think that’s why we did well.”
JDG’s BerLIN also spoke to @VALO2ASIA about VCT CN’s start, saying “We should believe that it’s not over yet. This is only the beginning. Maybe it hasn’t been good, but we’ve had bad starts in the past too. You can choose not to believe in us, but we won’t give up.”
