The VALORANT competitive season is in high gear, and VCT isn’t the only circuit the pros are playing in. The Esports World Cup main tournament for the title is almost here. Let’s recap everything to know, including a quick context refresher, format explainer, list of teams and players, and schedule.

What is the Esports World Cup?

The Esports World Cup is a massive gaming tournament with one of the largest prize pools in esports. The event, founded in 2024, includes over 25 tournaments in different video game titles. Some of its most popular games include League of Legends, Counter-Strike, Fortnite, and Dota 2. The event also has a festival portion, and it lasts for over a month. Teams and clubs earn points across the various game tournaments, and there’s an overall club championship on top of the individual game prizes, which adds an extra layer of competition beyond just winning your own title. Every partnered team competes in multiple games, and placements in each push them further up the overall leaderboards.

It’s important to note that the Esports World Cup is partially run and organized by the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF), a non-profit based in Saudi Arabia. The EWCF receives government funding from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). The event is backed by a large prize pool, much of which comes from the Esports World Cup Foundation. There is also a large sister tournament, the Esports Nations Cup, later in the year, which has a much more Olympic-style feel.

This has led some community members to question whether the competition is genuinely about celebrating national pride; others have accused the organization of ‘sportswashing.’ There is much community discourse online. Some netizens see the ENC as a chance for countries to come together, while others offer skepticism due to the government’s financial push into the esports ecosystem.

VALORANT at the 2026 Esports World Cup

The 2026 Esports World Cup occurs near the middle of the VCT season. Last year’s winner, Team Heretics, defeated Fnatic in a crazy comeback arc. TH will be fighting to maintain their top spot with an automatic qualification.

There are tons of roster changes occurring before the event. Notably, EDward Gaming’s core member Smoggy will not be present at the event due to health issues. After revealing the change on June 30 via X.com, the org announced its head coach, signed, will be subbing in to replace him.

In addition, Global Esports is going through some major roster restructures. The team just released its previous coach, FrosT, who led them into Tier 1 play and was present during their 1st-place EWC qualifier win. An assistant coach, vladK0r, was also cut. Reportedly, FrosT will be replaced by Platoon.

How Big is the 2026 EWC VALORANT Prize Pool?

The Esports World Cup is well-known for having one of the largest prize pools in esports history, and this year’s VALORANT tournament is no exception. The event boasts a 1,250,000 USD total prize pool, and 500,000 USD will go to the Grand Finals winners.

  • 1st Place: 500,000 USD
  • 2nd Place: 230,000 USD
  • 3rd Place: 130,000 USD
  • 4th Place: 70,000 USD

Who are the Favorites in the 2026 VALORANT Esports World Cup?

Currently, there are plenty of strong teams in the EWC running. Paper Rex has attracted some attention, as the team has a previous Masters victory under its belt and is high up in the VCT Power Rankings. PRX almost won Masters London, falling to Leviatán at the Grand Finals. However, the org has not been polished as of late, and they tend to choke under pressure. EDward Gaming, too, climbed quite far in the event, but similarly had some sloppy moments.

NongShim RedForce is also high up on the list. NS Redforce grabbed the Masters Santiago trophy in March, beating out veteran teams with years of experience ahead of them. The Korean org has swept through the VCT, winning Kickoff in their region and proving they’re locking in during this season.

NRG, Team Vitality, and G2 Esports are big names to look out for. NRG Ethan is known as a formidable IGL, and he has plenty of trophies to attest to it. He was on Evil Geniuses’ legendary Champs 2023 winning roster, and also led NRG to victory at Champs 2025. This is a team with heavy competitive experience and a calm, collected demeanor. Team Vitality is well-known for its skill in the FPS world, sweeping through games with tactical discipline in both VALORANT and Counter-Strike. Finally, G2 Esports, like NRG, shows rare NA FPS talent. The team has come oh-so-close to winning the past few Masters events, and if they reach their full potential, they could definitely stomp opponents.

2026 Esports World Cup: VALORANT Format and Schedule

The 2026 EWC’s main VALORANT event will start on Thursday, July 2, 2026, and end on Sunday, July 12, 2026. The event will begin with a Group Stage, where teams are seeded into several clusters and compete. Typically, the Group Stage eliminates half the team pool by its conclusion.

Next, the Playoffs will begin. Most of these matches, which include 8 teams, will be best-of-three. The big exception is the Grand Finals, which are a longer best-of-five event.

  • Group Stage: July 2 – July 7
  • Playoffs: July 9 – July 12
  • Quarterfinals: July 9-10
  • Semifinals: July 11
  • Third Place Match: July 12
  • Grand Finals: July 12
