The League of Legends community is abuzz as new matchmaking information reveals ‘losers queue’ might be more real than the playerbase thought. Here’s a recap.
Several age-old questions have persisted in the League of Legends universe. For example, why won’t my jungler gank? Why is my Mordekaiser 1 and 6 while Darius already has 12 kills? Why is the enemy Viego so mean in all chat? Today, we’re talking about one iconic query in particular: is ‘Losers Queue’ real?
Since the advent of Ranked play, Rioters have noticed an odd phenomenon. Sometimes, instead of on-and-off alternating wins and losses, players will encounter lengthy loss streaks without a single victory. Netizens call this ‘Losers Queue.’ Poor gameplay decisions can cause this, but the tilt potential is real, and some high-level players have theorized that the matchmaking algorithm might have something to do with it. Now, new Ranked information about duo queue penalties is sparking discussion as it seems ‘losers queue’ might have some real basis behind it.
On August 19, 2026, League of Legends Lead Gameplay Designer Matt Leung-Harrison (AKA RiotPhroxzon) popped up on X.com to reveal some fresh matchmaking information. According to RiotPhroxzon, duo queue penalties are real, and “higher in higher ranks.”
In full, Leung-Harrison wrote:
“Re: Duo queue matchmaking penalties. Saw some discussion about this. At lower ranks, ie. below Emerald, there’s basically no penalty for duoing. It only starts to kick in in a small way in Emerald/Diamond and higher at higher ranks as duo communication/coordination becomes more impactful.”
In other words, players above Emerald recieve a matchmaking disadvantage if they decide to duo queue with another competitor. This affects Emerald, Diamond, Master, Grandmaster, and Challenger players. It’s still unclear exactly what this penalty is, but logically, it would likely entail putting duo-queued teams with teammates who have a lower hidden MMR.
Typically, duo-queued teammates are communicating outside the game via Discord or another channel. This theoretically gives them stronger coordination than other team members, and allows them to have greater impact on matches. It appears Riot intends the duo queue penalty to offset this advantage.
Being in a private party can also make things more difficult for randomized teammates; hence why League and VALORANT don’t allow 4-stacks in comp.
RiotPhroxzon emphasized that “It’s tuned so that games at all ranks are fair, duo or no duo.”
Many League community members were not pleased with the revelation. They argued it validated Losers Queue’s existence, unfairly punishing high-elo players for making an effort to grind comp with friends.
“Riot be like ‘there’s no such thing as eomm or losers queue’ and indirectly admit they put sh– players with duo queued teammates,’ X.com user @souraniss wrote.
Another netizen, @NvNEUW, said, “you’d get called a conspiracy theorist for claiming this until 3 hours ago. Behavioral matchmaking next.”
@SoSleeplessss questioned, “Wait, so you get double punished for duoing? First, they give you harder lobbies because you have the advantage of communicating, and then they nuke your mmr?”
@Gok_Meram brought up a point commenters found interesting. “[The] Queue is called Solo/DUO. It’s in the name, [but] Duo has a penalty. Just remove all the fun from the game [at this point].”
It’s important to note that this isn’t the first time League has made moves to shift high ranks away from duo queues. Riot previously tightened up restrictions on party sizes in high MMR lobbies, and has made some previous indications in patch notes and playerbase communications that duo queue will be harder.
