Team Vitality and Team Spirit Decline IEM Beijing Invites

Two of Counter-Strike‘s strongest teams, Vitality and Spirit, have just declined their IEM Beijing invites. Why is this happening, and what does it mean for the event? Let’s recap.

Team Vitality Has Declined its IEM Beijing Invite

French org Team Vitality is one of Counter-Strike’s most fearsome opponents. Known for its discipline, the roster has studded its trophy collection with 1st placements throughout 2025 and 2026. It’s also a notably confident international competitor, punching with the same strength at regional circuits and high-profile events. Vitality snatched up two Major wins in 2025 (BLAST.tv Austin and StarLadder Budapest) and pummeled Intel Extreme Masters Kraków in February, performing with consistency.

The org’s current track record makes its recent decision more surprising: Team Vitality has declined its IEM Beijing 2026 invite, just a few months before the tournament starts.

Why Did Team Vitality Decline IEM Beijing?

If you’ve been out of the Counter-Strike loop for a while, Team Vitality is experiencing a big change. Two of its five main roster members (apEX and mezii) are becoming proud papas, and they’re taking paternity leave to spend time with their families (congratulations!) While the GOATs make a temporary transition from defusals to diaper changes, Justinas “jL” Lekavičius will be standing in at some events. Funnily enough, jL is also expecting a baby, so the stand-in may need his own stand-in soon. ropz, flameZ, and ZywOo are still chilling on the lineup for now, but it’s new territory for the team.

This was a key factor in Team Vitality’s decision to skip IEM Beijing. Vitality wrote in a statement:

“Missing an IEM event, especially in a new city, is not a decision we take lightly, however, our number one priority is to ensure that our players feel supported to spend the time they need with their families during this unique moment in their lives. To accommodate apEX and mezii taking their paternity leave, we needed to make adjustments to our competitive schedule.“

Vitality also emphasized, “Majors are our main focus in the competitive scene, and we will do whatever it takes for us to secure our fourth Major title and lift the trophy in Singapore. Instead of attending IEM Beijing with a substitute IGL, which limits our practice time, we have opted to attend events where our full roster can be present to make the most of our limited preparation window as possible in order to secure valuable VRS points ahead of the Major.“

The team issued a special apology to its Chinese fanbase, reassuring them they wouldn’t be forgotten. Vitality will reportedly add new content, merch, and connection opportunities in the region to make up for its absence.

That’s Not All… Team Spirit Just Declined IEM Beijing Too

Team Spirit is another of the scene’s strongest contenders. Young prodigy magixx is one of the only modern Counter-Strike players with an in-game easter egg. The community watches plenty of donk and sh1ro clips, and zont1x and tN1R pop off in their matches. Since a resurgence in 2024, the Russian team has been showing up and showing off with Major wins (Perfect World Shanghai) and BLAST Bounty sweeps. However, Spirit has reportedly also declined its IEM Beijing 2026 invite.

Why Did Team Spirit Decline IEM Beijing 2026?

Unfortunately, we don’t know at the time of writing why Team Spirit declined to attent IEM Beijing 2026. It could be anything, from player burnout to scheduling conflicts. It’s possible Team Spirit is taking a similar route to Vitality, aiming to stack up its points and get ready for Majors.

Team Falcons and FURIA remain teams to watch. The Falcons were the catalyst that got Nikola ‘NiKo’ Kovač his first Major win, and IGL karrigan is now at the helm calling the shots. FURIA had a wicked run throughout 2025, and its 2026 showing continues to bring Brazilian CS to the forefront.

MOUZ popped off at BLAST Bounty Summer 2026, impressing with their performance.

Notably, FaZe fans are excited, as the org is getting more frequent invites to international events. After subpar standings in recent years, FaZe Clan is restructuring and aiming for an upward trajectory.

Aurora Gaming has also made a ton of roster changes lately, shaking up its original Turkish lineup. The team brought in MOUZ star Jimpphat, and switched things around with new coach ashhh.

The MongolZ lost two of their star players, senzu and mzinho, to BC.Game earlier this year. This was a major blow to the core lineup that reached the Austin Major 2025 Grand Final and won the 2025 Esports World Cup. The community was wondering if the underdog team could continue at the same level, but they’ve surprised the world again by keeping up decent momentum. IEM Beijing will be another true test of the roster’s resilience.
