Niko Finally Wins a Major

Nikola “NiKo” Kovač is one of modern Counter-Strike’s most well-known players. He is widely considered one of the most mechanically gifted pros of all time, and has formerly played for orgs including MOUZ, FaZe Clan, and G2 Esports. Niko competitively debuted in 2009, meaning his career has spanned over 15 years and countless international competitions. He holds trophies from events including Intel Extreme Masters and BLAST Premier World Finals. However, despite all of the glory he had attained, something was missing: until today, Niko had never won a Major. He came close to the title during Stockholm 2021 with G2, but ultimately lost 0:2 to NaVi in the Grand Finals. The title has also eluded his teammate, AWPer m0NESY.

The IEM Cologne Major 2026 victory carries extra significance for Niko and m0NESY’s fans for this reason. Much of the community sees it as a long-deserved proof of their careers, especially for Niko, who is an industry veteran. These storylines may be part of the reason why this Major is pulling record viewership numbers.

FURIA: The Context

Furia has a long history. The org, created in 2017, was instrumental in fostering Brazil’s Counter-Strike talent. While the region now holds a fearsome reputation, it was originally an uphill battle to gain repute in the EMEA-dominated pro sphere. IGL Gabriel “FalleN” Toledo is particularly responsible for this feat and has spent years advancing Brazilian teams. He is highly respected in the country (even by rivals on paiN and MIBR), considered the “Godfather of Brazilian Counter-Strike,” and was one of the scene’s best AWPers in his prime.

Notably, FalleN announced this spring that he would retire at the end of this year. FalleN’s career is almost as long as the Counter-Strike franchise’s existence: he began playing in 2003, and will sign off with nearly 24 years of play. This longevity is almost unheard of for an esports athlete. FURIA’s loss at this Major is therefore bittersweet, as it is among FalleN’s final few competitive events, and the team will be saying goodbye to its mentor.

Team Falcons’ Road to IEM Cologne

Saudi Arabian org Team Falcons is a more recent addition to the Counter-Strike world. Though the brand has existed since 2017, it only entered Counter-Strike in 2020.

The Counter-Strike community largely considers Team Falcons controversial, since it has significant investment from wealthy backers in its home country. Saudi Arabia has garnered sportswashing accusations from the esports world in the past (for example, the Esports World Cup circuit, which received funding from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund). However, Team Falcons has denied that any of their funds come from the organization, maintaining that they originate from corporate sponsorships. This doesn’t ease the sting for opposing teams’ fans, who still argue that the money provides an unfair advantage with stacked rosters.

Regardless of where the money comes from, Team Falcons’ investments allowed them to snatch up some of Counter-Strike’s biggest names in the past few years during major roster reshuffles. First, they grabbed Niko and m0NESY in 2025. These contracts paid off: though Vitality knocked them out of the Esports World Cup, Falcons placed 3rd. Now, they’ve won a 500,000$ Major.

How Did Team Falcons Win IEM Cologne?

In April 2026, the Falcons made another acquisition: they signed karrigan after he departed FaZe Clan. The move was an adjustment, since karrigan had played on FaZe since 2021. However, FaZe had a serious falloff in the past few years, and the team was especially disjointed in 2025, with sloppy performances at the Austin Major and several other events. Team cohesion was lacking, and FaZe had significantly restructured its strategies in very little time, making it difficult to tell what exactly was going wrong.

Team Falcons’ IEM Cologne win largely boils down to strategic scouting and identifying players whose capabilities exceed the support their previous teams provided. In a sense, the Falcons ‘Frankensteined’ a super-team by placing all the carries in one squad together. karrigan proved his IGLing could turn the tides in a team with more cohesion, and m0NESY can safely AWP with teammates who reliably hold map space. Niko, too, got the opportunity to frag out without fear.

In addition, Team Falcons arguably had one of the harder brackets in the Major. Though their money might have come easily, victory did not: the Falcons had to beat Team Vitality and Team Spirit, two of their strongest competitors and analyst favorites, to progress to the Grand Finals. Vitality was particularly fearsome, since the team has been on a roll in recent years and is known for extremely disciplined performance.

It should be noted that FURIA put up a decent fight in their games. Team Falcons ended each map with a 13-8 win, which is certainly not a clean sweep. Fans thought that molodoy especially had some clean clip moments. The industry is watching to see how FURIA will respond to this Grand Finals performance and FalleN’s upcoming departure.

Team Falcons IGL karrigan wrote in an X.com post after the match: “Cologne Major champion 2026. So proud and yes we did have unfinished business @NiKoCS_. Thanks for amazing support and thanks to my amazing team mates”
