The Swiss grind at the IEM Cologne Major is finished, and the eight teams heading to the LANXESS Arena are locked in. One name is missing that almost nobody had on their eliminated list: NAVI, the reigning IEM Atlanta champions, are going home before the playoffs even begin.
It took a decisive 2-2 series, a heartbreak clutch, and a G2 side that flat refused to die. Here is how the bracket came together.
In about the cruelest way the format allows. NAVI and G2 met in a win-or-go-home series for the eighth and final playoff spot. G2 climbed out of a map deficit to take it 2-1.
NAVI actually grabbed the opener on Dust2, which was G2’s own map pick, edging it 13-11. Then it slipped away. G2 dragged Inferno to overtime and won 16-14, then closed Mirage 13-10 to finish the reverse sweep.
The gut-punch arrived on Dust2, where Igor “w0nderful” Zhdanov clutched a 1v4 with 2 HP on the clock. In a kinder universe, that round flips the whole night. It did not. NAVI finished 9th-11th for 20,000 USD, their first Major playoff absence since the Shanghai Major.
The other two Stage 3 deciders went the underdogs’ way:
They join the four sides that qualified earlier. Team Spirit and FURIA carved through Stage 3, with Aurora and Team Vitality close behind. Falcons complete the eight after beating both G2 and NAVI during the group stage. Spare a thought for MOUZ, who crashed out before the arena entirely. That is a rough result for a roster of that quality.
| Quarterfinal | Matchup | Format |
|---|---|---|
| QF1 | Aurora vs BetBoom | Bo3 |
| QF2 | Team Spirit vs G2 Esports | Bo3 |
| QF3 | FURIA vs 9z | Bo3 |
| QF4 | Team Vitality vs Team Falcons | Bo3 |
The playoffs run June 18 to 21 at the LANXESS Arena. It is straight single elimination, every round a best-of-three, with a best-of-five grand final to settle the title, per the official bracket on Liquipedia.
Team Spirit against G2 is the one with teeth. Danil “donk” Kryshkovets has been in frightening form, and Spirit barely dropped a map all stage. G2 walk in with zero expectation after sneaking the last seed. That can be exactly the right headspace for a deep run.
The other heavyweight is Vitality against Falcons. Vitality are chasing a third straight Major to pull level with Astralis in the history books. Falcons, now built around Finn “karrigan” Andersen, finally look like more than a long-term project.
And if Spirit and Vitality both come through, their semifinal is the collision this whole event has been pointing toward. The only shame is that it lands before the grand final rather than in it.
