Counter-Strike is reaching new viewership heights during IEM Cologne 2026.
Fans around the world are tuned into IEM Cologne, and there are plenty of crazy plot twists keeping them locked in. From HeavyGod’s mid-match Steam ban to Magixx’s insane 1v4 to the Falcons vs. Vitality face-off, the tournament’s storylines and showy plays are attracting attention like never before. As it happens, this seems to be translating into a sizable viewership increase: IEM Cologne has become the most-viewed Counter-Strike event in history, and CS numbers are dwarfing competitors on major streaming sites. Here’s everything to know.
Counter-Strike Majors have long set an esports industry standard. The events are among the most important in the FPS sphere, attracting millions of viewers. Since DreamHack’s early days in 2013, the Majors have carried on a decade-long legacy (and the franchise’s lore goes even further back to the first CS tournaments in the early 2000s).
Despite its ‘older’ status among esports titles, Counter-Strike has not shown signs of slowing down anytime soon. In fact, the title is having a resurgence in recent years, and its viewership is picking up steam to match.
On June 20, 2026, viewership-tracking website EsportsCharts revealed the ongoing IEM Cologne 2026 Major had become the most-viewed Counter-Strike event of all time, surpassing the BLAST Austin Major in 2025 and the PGM Stockholm Major in 2021. The Cologne Major reportedly reached over 76 million hours watched by fans (how much of that was the 25-22 Mirage overtime?) in its 140 hours of broadcast.

This indicates a notable fact: Counter-Strike’s most recent Majors show a consistent upward trend, and each is outperforming the last. The viewership heights also extend to other social media platforms, and EsportsCharts noted that TikToks of the Major performed remarkably well.
VALORANT and Counter-Strike have a history. Though the two FPS titles are competitors, they have significant pro overlap. In fact, almost all of VALORANT’s first generation of athletes directly migrated to the game from CS (take TenZ, ScreaM, Boaster, FNS, and Derke as examples). Though they share a rivalry, the titles have similar esports theory and match formats.
The games’ pro tournaments also share an extremely similar schedule. As IEM Cologne 2026 is progressing, VALORANT is finishing up Masters London, one of the largest international events of the year.

The events are both streaming on Twitch. However, Counter-Strike appears to be outperforming VALORANT during simultaneous broadcasts on the site. It’s important to note that Riot Games has its own esports streaming website, which may split viewers, and VALORANT’s YouTube streams pull strong numbers, but the stat difference is still significant.

Esports org Heroic posted on X.com about this phenomenon on June 19, 2026, including a screenshot of Counter-Strike viewership peaking around 870k next to VALORANT’s lower point at 41k. The post received over 3,500 likes and sparked commentary among the community.
Another X.com user, @salii_b, noted during a VALORANT stream that “Five minutes into the stream we already have 5x the viewership.” Indeed, Aurora vs. FURIA quickly climbed to over 192,000 viewers.
Why is this happening?
Well, the storylines are in full swing. We saw Team Vitality, who have been in top form in recent years (winning the Austin 2025 Major, Budapest 2025 Major, and IEM Krakow 2026), face off against and fall to Team Falcons. Team Falcons, meanwhile, has been investing heavily in its roster, still ripping through the opposition with legendary AWPer m0NESY and taking on veteran athlete karrigan after his FaZe departure. Russian org Team Spirit is cruising through the playoffs with star player donk after an extremely close face-off with G2 (which included a graffiti-worthy 1v4 clutch from magixx and an unexpected disconnect from HeavyGod). Brazilian org FURIA, whose fans bring the energy, and Aurora Gaming are also in the running.
IEM Cologne 2026 will conclude with the Grand Finals on June 21, 2026.
