Esports team Aurora Gaming has announced a partnership with Conor McGregor, and the community is chattering. Here’s everything to know about the collab and what it means for esports.

Aurora Gaming Announces Conor McGregor Partnership

On July 9, 2026, European esports organization Aurora Gaming announced a partnership with UFC fighter Conor McGregor. McGregor, who hails from Ireland, has held the UFC Featherweight and Lightweight Champion titles. He became the first fighter in the promotion’s history to hold two championship belts simultaneously. Beyond the titles, McGregor has become a prominent figure in the sport for his commentary and trash talk with other fighters.

Aurora Gaming captioned an X.com post showing McGregor wearing the team’s jersey: “No words needed. Welcome to the family.”

Community Reactions

Aurora’s partnership with Conor McGregor is sparking some controversy among the team’s fanbase. In 2018, several allegations arose against him, with an involved party claiming McGregor had assaulted them after a party and providing documentation of injury. An Irish civil jury found McGregor liable for the incident and ordered him to pay damages. McGregor has denied the charges and attempted to appeal them, but the Irish courts rejected these attempts. Similar allegations arose later in Ibiza in 2022 and Miami in 2023.

The Aurora Gaming community is criticizing the team’s choice of partner. Scrolling through the post’s replies 4 hours later, it has over 400,000 views, but about 1,800 likes. In addition, many of its comments seem to mention the allegations. One user, @ellathedogg, asked, “@grok is this a joke?” Another netizen, @kyozerv2, wrote: “As an Irish person, go f— yourself.”

One post from @vinea__95, which received nearly 500 likes, stated: “Good job on signing a r-pist, great org.”

What Does This Mean for Esports?

The Conor McGregor partnership may have implications for Aurora Gaming’s reputation among its fans. The org’s recent Counter-Strike roster changes, which added former MOUZ player Jimpphat and coach Ashley ashBattye to the lineup, alienated some community members who felt Aurora was shifting away from its Turkish team identity. The Conor McGregor collab occurs less than a week later, while fan discourse is still running high.

That said, the move has generated publicity. In addition, it signals a broader trend of esports’ ascension to the same status as traditional physical sports. These days, major universities offer esports scholarships for athletes, traditional sports franchises are pouring money into teams (think soccer star David Beckham’s involvement in Wolves Esports), and tournaments fill arenas with crowds that rival traditional sporting events. Sponsors are signing significant deals with organizations, and governments have even started recognizing top players as professional athletes for visa purposes.
