Paper Rex entered VALORANT Champions 2026 as an analyst favorite. With countless VCT internationals in tow, the org also stormed through the VCT Pacific 2026 season and earned second-place finishes at Masters Santiago and Masters London.

Though PRX has participated in every Champs since 2022 and placed second in Champions 2023, the team has never secured the trophy. Fans were hoping 2026 could be the year that changed, but the org has now exited the Playoffs in 7th/8th place. What does this mean for their esports future, and what has PRX said about the finish? Let’s recap.

Paper Rex was in good form on the way into Shanghai. Its second-place finishes in both VALORANT Masters events (Masters Bangkok and Masters Santiago) were on everyone’s minds, and the org’s VCT Pacific regular season had been strong as well. They won Stage 1 and placed a respectable 3rd at Kickoff, solidifying themselves as a powerhouse in the region. It also helped that PRX was still carrying its 2025 clout. The Masters Toronto winners had dominated the international stage, following it up with a win at the Radiant International Invitational.

PRX has a reputation for performing well throughout the early stages of a tournament, but choking at the last minute. Its Masters Toronto win had proven the team had the potential to break this curse, so fans were wondering if this could be the year they finally won Champions. However, warning signs began to show as summer ended: PRX dipped to a 5th/6th finish in VCT Pacific Stage 2, and rested near the bottom of the Esports World Cup leaderboard.

The team briefly redeemed itself by winning its the Champions 2026 Group Stage 2-0. That said, both matches (with G2 and Team Liquid) were close, ending with 2-1 scorelines.

After qualifying for the Playoffs, PRX faced LOUD in the upper bracket. Here, everything changed: LOUD handed them a defeat. The 13-9 and 15-13 overtime wins were not crushing, but they sent PRX to the lower bracket.

PRX vs T1: Paper Rex Exits VALORANT Champions 2026

Here, PRX battled T1. The South Korean org already has a legacy in League of Legends and other Riot titles, but now it’s coming for VALORANT, too. Last year, they won Masters Bangkok, briefly making them the first and only team to hold reigning international trophies in two Riot titles at once.

While T1 hadn’t stood out at 2026’s international VCT events, they had quietly crept up on PRX’s top spot in VCT Pacific. T1 didn’t secure any regular season 1st-place finishes, but they performed quite consistently across the year. That consistency paid off. T1 has spent most of 2026 competing with PRX in regionals, and the teams know each other well.

In the Champions 2026 lower bracket, T1 picked Lotus as its first map. They issued Paper Rex a firm 13-7 defeat, supplementing a double-Controller comp with Chamber to deny PRX’s risky space-taking plays. Munchkin, Meteor, and BuZz made examples of their opponents.

PRX locked in and returned the favor on Ascent, winning 13-6. invy’s Sova was a key factor, as the comps were extemely similar save for something’s Yoru. The team was snowballing off this victory, going into decider map Summit with a 9-3 advantage on the first half. Jinggg became a battle Sage menace, fragging out with a 23/16 K/D. However, the choking curse manifested once again: all of the sudden, T1 started making a comeback on Attacker. iZu’s Fade and BuZz’s Neon destroyed PRX’s defenses, only losing two rounds in the entire second half. T1 ended up reverse sweeping PRX at the last second, making a comeback from 3-9 to a 13-11 win.

What Paper Rex Said About the Champions 2026 Loss

With the defeat, Paper Rex has exited Champions Shanghai in 7th/8th place. They leave with a 50,000 USD prize, tied with NS RedForce.

PRX issued a statement on social media about the loss:

“Four VCT Pacific titles, five international grand finals, qualified for all but one international VCT event, and became the first Southeast Asian team to win a global FPS trophy!

We forged memories, entertained you with our whimsical plays, and made you squirm with our questionable agent comps.

Today, we close this chapter, as we make our exit from VCT Champions Shanghai in 7-8th place. Not quite the result we wanted, nor expected. And not how we wanted this era to end.“

The team thanked their fanbase for supporting them, and promised: “Paper Rex will return.“

What’s Next?

After VALORANT Champions 2026, the VCT enters off season. Teams will cool down, regroup, and restructure as they prepare for regional Kickoffs next year.

During this time, it’s possible some key transfers will occur. One of the biggest themes of VALORANT Champions Shanghai has been to expect the unexpected. Long-standing team FNATIC, which previously qualified for every Champions since the VCT’s start, didn’t make it in this year. All VCT China teams faced elimination before the Playoffs even began, leaving zero left to represent their home turf. Meanwhile, all VCT Americas orgs progressed.

It’s clear that with the changing meta (Neon, Yoru, and Chamber encourage more aggression), veteran teams can’t stay complacent. They have to keep adapting to the game or risk being left behind.

This means we’ll probably see some players making exits from teams they’ve spent years on, and organizations making risky, experimental moves. Long-time FNATIC IGL Boaster already revealed the team is allowing him to explore his options. Paper Rex has had its core roster for a while: it’s unknown if they’ll shake things up.
