American org ENVY is fighting to return to its former FPS status. After winning Ascension last year, the org is trying to keep its momentum, making significant roster changes. Now, nightz will join its core lineup. Here’s everything to know about the move.

ENVY Announces Nightz Signing

On July 16, 2026, North American VALORANT org ENVY announced Christian “nightz” Smith would join its main roster. nightz, hailing from the US, most recently played for Cubert Academy (Sentinels’ Academy team). He is primarily a Duelist and Controller player, known for his Omen gameplay.

This is not the first time nightz has competed with the team. He previously worked with ENVY for a brief period in 2025, winning For Those Who Dare, and in May 2026, winning 2-1 against Cloud9 during the Esports World Cup Qualifiers. He was also part of RANKERS, the original roster ENVY signed in March 2025.

In an X.com post, ENVY wrote: “The next generation is here. Welcome to the big time.”

Smith replied on his personal account with a selfie, calling himself “VCT’s biggest secret.”

What Does This Mean for ENVY in VALORANT Esports?

ENVY has a long history in the FPS world, but it has spent some time away from the VALORANT sphere. The org shuttered operations in 2022 after OpTic Gaming acquired it. For several years, things looked bleak for ENVY’s future. All that changed in January 2025, when longtime leader Mike “Hastr0” Rufail bought back the brand and re-entered several esports.

The team signed a full VALORANT roster including mostly content creators, an unconventional move that stood out to the community. YouTubers P0PPIN (known for creating the infamous Poppin Swing) and Eggster were part of the mix, in addition to fellow influencer canezerra.

Initially, the lineup climbed through the VCT ranks at lightning speed. ENVY won the VALORANT Challengers League (VCL)’s Ascension tournament in 2025, immediately elevating it back to a Tier 1 status. However, its 2026 performance has declined sharply, with relatively poor results in VCT Americas Kickoff and Stage 1. The org also failed to qualify for the 2026 Esports World Cup after fumbling at qualifiers.

ENVY benched P0PPIN at the start of July, noting that the move was specifically planned for Americas Stage 2. Nightz’s signing also arrives before the tournament, showing that ENVY is going all in on some final adjustments to finesse its performance as much as possible.

VCT Americas Stage 2 is fast approaching, and ENVY has stiff competition. The team will battle against former Champions winners LOUD, NRG, and Evil Geniuses, in addition to G2 Esports, an analyst favorite known for its fearsome win streaks. The tournament is also significant as it will be ENVY’s last chance to qualify for Champions 2026: the top two Stage 2 teams automatically gain entry.
