Just three months away from its planned start date, the 2026 Esports Nations Cup has officially postponed to 2027. Why did the tournament make this decision, and what does this mean for the industry? Let’s recap.
The Esports World Cup (EWC) shot onto the scene in 2024, combining over twenty esports titles in one months-long tournament festival. The event, funded by the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) and Esports Foundation, is centered in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Its host country rotates every few years. Besides its unprecedented scale, the EWC is notable for having one of the largest prize pools in esports history. Its 2026 iteration surpassed 75 million USD in total. During the EWC, esports orgs sign up as partnered clubs and compete in multiple games. The tournament crowns the year’s strongest overall team.
The Esports Foundation announced the Esports Nations Cup two years after the original EWC, intending for it to serve as a sort of sister tournament. However, there was one key difference: instead of signing up as franchised teams, individual countries would field esports rosters in an Olympics-style competition.
This new format had already secured partnerships from well-known players worldwide. For instance, VALORANT pro TenZ was among its 2026 Team Canada lineup. In the League of Legends sphere, viewers were also anticipating players from HLE, GEN.G, and T1 all playing on the same Team Korea roster. In other words, the industry would get to see long-standing rivals work together to represent a common country banner.
On August 18, 2026, the Esports Nations Cup announced that its inaugural event would be postponed to 2027. The tournament put out a press release on its website detailing the situation. This explained that the decision occurred “following ongoing assessment of the wider regional situation, and after consultation with key stakeholders.”
The Esports Nations Cup was originally slated to occur throughout November 2026. Its postponement occurs just three months before its planned start date.
The ENC’s decision mainly stems from regional hosting concerns and a desire to correctly execute event plans on a large scale. “Given ENC’s unprecedented international scale and the uncertainty created by the wider regional situation, [the Esports Foundation] believes moving the inaugural competition to November 2027 is the responsible decision to provide the certainty and stability that National Teams, publishers, partners and fans expect.“
The 2026 competition would have been held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The ENC maintains that “Saudi Arabia remains fully capable of hosting events, with major sporting and entertainment events continuing as planned.” However, current geopolitical instability in the greater middle east would possibly present challenges in bringing the international tournament to life. More than 100 countries have obtained partnered status to join the event. As a result, this would make it one of the largest-scale international esports ventures in history.

Esports Foundation CEO Ralf Reichert stated:
“The decision to postpone the Esports Nations Cup was not taken lightly […] The response from National Team Partners, publishers, players and communities around the world has shown us how much potential this competition has. We owe them an inaugural ENC delivered under the right conditions and at the level this idea deserves. Hosting the tournament in Riyadh next year does not change our commitment. We will continue investing in our National Team Partners, working with publishers and building the national ecosystems already taking shape around the competition. The work continues, and our ambition for ENC remains unchanged.”
Above all, the Esports World Cup and Esports Nations cup represent a growing mainstream market for esports tournaments. The events operate on a scale comparable to traditional, physical sports, also recieving notable government involvement.
The Esports Nations Cup’s postponement won’t cancel the main tournament: The Esports Foundation plans to “continue working closely with National Team Partners, publishers and other stakeholders to provide clarity on the revised competition calendar, qualification pathways and other implications of the new timeline.“
As of right now, it seems the ENC is targeting a November 2027 launch. However, the tournament’s exact dates remain TBD. This is supported by the tourney’s updated website, which features a ‘November 2027’ banner on the main page.
