No strategy beats the house edge over time. Some keep it as low as possible, some raise it, and many of those passed around online ignore it altogether. These guides start from the edge, because it decides the long-run result.

Blackjack strategy

Blackjack is the one casino game where your decisions change the edge. Basic strategy is a chart of the mathematically best play for every hand against every dealer up-card. With good rules it brings the house edge below 1%.

Basic strategy, simplified

Your handDealer shows 2–6Dealer shows 7–Ace
Hard 8 or lessHitHit
Hard 9Double on 3–6, otherwise hitHit
Hard 10–11DoubleDouble 10 v 2–9, 11 v 2–10
Hard 12Stand on 4–6, hit on 2–3Hit
Hard 13–16StandHit
Hard 17+StandStand
Soft 13–17 (Ace + 2–6)Double on 5–6 (some on 3–4), otherwise hitHit
Soft 18Double on 3–6, stand on 2Stand on 7–8, hit on 9–Ace
Pair of Aces or 8sSplitSplit
Pair of 10sStandStand

Card counting doesn't work online, where the shoe is reshuffled continuously. Avoid tables that pay 6:5 for blackjack and skip insurance.

How to play slots

Choose a high RTP and a volatility that fits your bankroll, set a session limit and treat a bonus as extra playing time. The online slots guide covers RTP and volatility in detail.

Roulette

VariantHouse edge
French, with la partage1.35% on even-money bets
European (single zero)2.7%
American (double zero)5.26%

Play French or European, never American. Every bet on a European wheel has the same 2.7% edge, so bet type changes variance, not expected loss.

Betting systems that don't work

SystemHow it worksWhy it fails
MartingaleDouble after every lossA losing run hits the table limit or your bankroll first
FibonacciRaise stakes along the Fibonacci sequenceSame problem, more slowly
D'AlembertRaise by one unit after a lossDoesn't change the edge
"Hot" and "cold" numbersBet on recent patternsEach spin is independent

Bankroll management

Decide what you can afford to lose before you start, split it into sessions and stop when a session's budget is gone. Stake 1–2% of your session budget per bet, take breaks, and never chase losses. Use deposit limits and time-outs; Problem Gambling Ireland offers free support on 089 241 5401.

Roulette bets and their odds

Split (two numbers)17:12 in 37
Dozen or column2:112 in 37
Red/black, odd/even1:118 in 37

Every bet on a European wheel has the same 2.7% edge; the bet type changes variance, not the expected loss.

Session bankroll

€50€0.50~100
€100€1~100
€200€2~100

Practising with demo games

Most slots and table games have a demo mode. Use it to learn basic strategy or feel out a slot's volatility; demo results don't predict real-money results.

Comparing games by cost per hour

House edge alone doesn't show what a game costs you, because pace matters. A slot at 300 spins an hour with a 4% edge costs far more per hour than a blackjack table at 60 hands with under 1%. For the same €1 stake: slots about €12 an hour, roulette (~40 spins, 2.7%) about €1.08, blackjack (~60 hands, ~0.5%) about €0.30.

Knowing when to stop

Decide your stop points before you start: a loss limit, a win target and a time limit. When you hit any of them, stop. If you find yourself breaking those rules, use self-exclusion and talk to Problem Gambling Ireland on 089 241 5401.

House edge by game

GameHouse edge
Blackjack, basic strategy, good rulesUnder 1%
Baccarat, banker betAbout 1.06%
European roulette2.7%
American roulette5.26%
Online slotsAbout 3–6%
KenoOften 10% or more

The edge is what each bet costs on average. Combine it with how many bets you make an hour to get your real cost.

Setting a session budget

Decide the amount you are prepared to lose before you start and treat it as the cost of the evening. Divide it into a stake per bet that gives you at least 100 to 200 bets. Set the limit in the casino's account settings so the decision is made before you play, not during.

Strategies that do not work

  • Martingale: doubling after losses runs into table limits and your bankroll long before it recovers.
  • Hot and cold numbers: past spins and draws do not change the next one.
  • Timing slots: results do not depend on the time of day.

Questions

Does basic strategy work in blackjack?
It cuts the house edge to the minimum possible, under 1% with good rules, but doesn't remove it.
Does the martingale work?
No. It raises the risk of a large loss without changing the edge.
Is there a strategy to win at slots?
No. Only the choice of RTP and volatility matters.
Which roulette bet has the best odds?
All bets on a European wheel have the same 2.7% edge; even-money bets just win more often.
Is there a strategy that beats the casino?
No. Strategy can lower the house edge in games like blackjack, but no system turns the edge in your favour.
