New Overwatch Sombra Rework Will Make Her a Support Hero

Sombra is one of Overwatch’s sneakiest DPS. She’s been reworked a thousand times, but this might be the most surprising one yet. A surprise announcement at Blizzcon 2026 says Sombra will become a Support hero: here’s everything we know.
Overwatch Sombra Rework Will Make Her a Support
Yes, you read that right: Overwatch has officially announced that Sombra reworks will change the character from a DPS to a support. The official Overwatch account has confirmed this: “Sombra as a Support was nowhere near our 2026 bingo card.”
The Sombra rework reveal occurred live at Blizzcon 2026. Overwatch’s team stated,
“Sombra has recieved her own hotfix, turning her into a Support.”
This is not the first time Sombra has undergone major changes. Sombra has gone through several major reworks since her 2016 debut, each one changing how her stealth kit actually works. Early on, Blizzard gave her infinite duration on both Stealth and Translocator, though her movement speed bonus got trimmed down to balance things out.
Then came the bigger Overwatch 2 rework in October 2023, which turned Stealth into a passive that kicks in automatically after a few seconds without shooting or taking damage, while also boosting her gun’s damage and making Hack cancel her invisibility. These changes aimed to make her feel more active and committal in fights, giving enemies clearer ways to counter her instead of chasing an invisible target with no real openings. However, they maintained her DPS role, even if her playstyle shifted.
It’s hard to tell how the new Sombra changes will affect her kit or the in-game meta. It’ll probably take a few days for things to settle in before players can make a judgement.
When is Sombra Becoming a Support?
Sombra’s swap from DPS to Support is already live in the game as a trial, before the update fully rolls out. The Sombra hotfix will go into effect “all weekend,” until Monday, September 14.
After the trial, the update would likely return on October 6, 2026 (the launch of Season 5) if it is successful.
Netizens are Mad
The Sombra rework is getting very mixed reactions from netizens. Sombra has long been a fan favorite DPS pick in Overwatch, and she has a unique playstyle that will be hard to replicate. Blizzard has prioritized flashy, high-visibility DPS lately, but Sombra players don’t pick her for that: they enjoy her high outplay potential and challenging game sense requirements.
Sombra’s invisibility lets players make a real impact on the match if they know what they’re doing. They can singlehandedly stop health pack access and cancel game-changing Ultimates. There’s no better feeling than turning fights in your team’s favor at the perfect moment. No other DPS has the same mix of stealth, disruption, and high skill ceiling.
User @lucianhrts replied to Overwatch’s post, cautioning: “Do not do this. No one who plays sombra plays her because they want to heal. We want to be in the enemy backlines killing people.”
Another commenter said the rework is “Actually such a horrid idea. Low elo players have no idea how to play around her, and high elo is either weak and useless or busted and hated by the entire community.”
Even Twitch streamer ConnorEatsPants, who has over 720,000 followers, chimed in. He stated sarcastically: “excited for a new sombra rework. 5th times the charm.”
Players will have a difficult time finding any supportive comments in Overwatch’s replies. At most, some gamers’ nuanced perspectives say they will remain cautiously optimistic and not judge the move until Sombra’s rework actually rolls out.
