LGD Gaming DOTA 2 Player Banned Three Days Before TI 2026

A player has just been permanently banned three days before The International 2026 begins. LGD Gaming’s midlaner TaiLung will be leaving the battlefield, with an emergency substitution coming soon. Let’s recap everything we know about the situation.

LGD Gaming Pro TaiLung Permanently Banned From All PGL DOTA 2 Events

On August 9, 2026, DOTA 2 team LGD Gaming announced core roster member Santiago “TaiLung” Agüero Gustavo has been banned from competition at TI 2026. This occurs just three days before the event kicks off, likely leaving the org in a stressful position. The midlaner also faces a permanent ban at all PGL events.

TaiLung originally shot onto the scene as a young prodigy. He began competing at just 14, gaining attention in circuits throughout the Americas. From January to May 2026, he played on HEROIC, which disbanded before his LGD Gaming transfer.

In an X.com post on the matter, the Chinese org wrote that they “recently became aware of information concerning a potential competitive integrity issue.” After working with tournament organizers and initiating an internal review, LGD concluded that TaiLung had broken the event’s rules.

Notably, LGD Gaming self-reported the issue, and was reportedly unaware any violations were occurring.

Why Was TaiLung Banned from TI 2026?

The team has not yet stated exactly what actions TaiLung took that resulted in the ban. However, LGD confirmed:

“The relevant tournament organizers have issued decisions regarding the matter. TaiLung will not be permitted to participate in The International 2026. In addition, PGL has imposed a permanent ban on TaiLung from all PGL events.“

A permanent ban generally indicates serious misconduct. In some scenarios, competitive integrity issues that qualify for this punishment have the potential to impact the outcomes of games.

LGD has confirmed it respects PGL’s decision, also stating the team “will complete all necessary follow-up procedures in accordance with applicable tournament rules and requirements.”

The org wrote regarding the situation:

“Fair competition and competitive integrity are fundamental to professional esports and remain core principles that LGD is committed to upholding. Whenever potential competitive integrity concerns arise, the club will take appropriate and timely action based on facts and evidence, proactively report relevant information to the appropriate tournament organizers, and cooperate fully with any subsequent review and related proceedings.”

TaiLung Responds

A few hours later, TaiLung posted on his personal Instagram story. He noted that he would prefer not to comment specifically about the ruling that occurred. Translated from the original Portuguese, part of his statement reads:

“My silence is not an admission, acceptance, or confirmation of any accusations, statements, or rumors […] I’m waiting to speak with my lawyer and will address this through proper channels.”

TaiLung thanked his followers for respecting that he will take time before issuing any further comments about the issue.

How Will This Affect TI 2026?

LGD confirmed it will still compete in TI 2026 despite the situation. However, the org will have to make some roster reshuffles to continue its run. The club has reportedly recieved special permission from TI’s organizers to make emergency mid-season changes. “The club is currently finalizing changes to the mid-lane position and completing the required procedures. The new mid-laner and LGD’s final roster for The International 2026 will be announced as soon as they are confirmed.”

TaiLung arrived to LGD on May 25, 2026, when the organization acquired HEROIC’s full South American roster after it disbanded. It was a bright moment for LGD, since they had also disbanded in 2024 and the new lineup was a chance to resurrect the team. The last-minite disqualification throws a significant hurdle in the org’s quest to rebuild.

LGD has stated it is still “fully focused” on preparing for the event. Last-minute adjustments of this scale can be difficult to recover from: the competitive sphere is watching to see how this will play out.
