Launched in 2013, DOTA 2 has a lasting esports legacy. In July 2026, the title will host a tournament at the Esports World Cup (EWC). Here’s everything to know about the format, schedule, teams, and how to watch.

What is the Esports World Cup?

The Esports World Cup is a massive gaming tournament with one of the largest prize pools in esports. The event, founded in 2024, includes over 25 tournaments in different video game titles. Some of its most popular games include League of Legends, Counter-Strike, Fortnite, and Dota 2. The event also has a festival portion, and it lasts for over a month. Teams and clubs earn points across the various game tournaments, and there’s an overall club championship on top of the individual game prizes, which adds an extra layer of competition beyond just winning your own title. Every partnered team competes in multiple games, and placements in each push them further up the overall leaderboards.

The Esports World Cup is partially run and organized by the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF), a non-profit based in Saudi Arabia. The EWCF receives government funding from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). The event is backed by a large prize pool, much of which comes from the Esports World Cup Foundation. There is also a large sister tournament, the Esports Nations Cup, later in the year, which has a much more Olympic-style feel.

It’s important to note that the EWC has sparked discourse in the esports community. Members have questioned whether the competition is genuinely about celebrating national pride; others have accused the organization of ‘sportswashing.’ Some netizens see the ENC as a chance for countries to come together, while others offer skepticism due to the government’s financial push into the esports ecosystem.

DOTA 2 at the 2026 Esports World Cup

In 2025, the Russian organization Team Spirit took the EWC trophy from Team Falcons. They will return to defend their title, and Team Falcons is also in the running for a second chance at the crown. The Gaimin Gladiators, who placed first in 2024, will not return this year.

Who are the Favorites in the 2026 DOTA 2 Esports World Cup?

Team Spirit are the reigning EWC champs and have several TI trophies. However, Team Falcons are also fearsome opponents, and they won last year’s TI. PVISION is another team to watch, as they’ve been stomping opponents this season and won DreamLeague Season 29. Tundra Esports, whose roster recently moved to 1w Team, dominated in 2025. Despite organizational reshuffling, they were extremely consistent and steamrolled the Tier 1 tournament scene, which could very well continue here.

The EWC qualifiers can also shed some light on teams to watch. Poor Rangers, LevelUp, LGD Gaming, Vici Gamin, REKONIX, Gamer Legion, Team Nemesis, and Nigma Galaxy all scored well in the events.

How Big is the 2026 EWC DOTA 2 Prize Pool?

The Esports World Cup is well-known for having one of the largest prize pools in esports history, and this year’s DOTA 2 tournament is no exception. The event boasts a 2,000,000 USD total prize pool, and 750,000 USD will go to the Grand Finals winners.

  • 1st Place: 750,000 USD
  • 2nd Place: 340,000 USD
  • 3rd Place: 200,000 USD
  • 4th Place: 120,000 USD
  • 5th-8th Place: 70,000 USD

DOTA 2 EWC 2026 Format and Schedule

The 2026 EWC’s main DOTA 2 event will start on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, and end on Sunday, July 19, 2026. The event will begin with a Group Stage, where teams are seeded into several clusters and compete. The top two Group Stage winners automatically qualify for the Playoffs. 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place teams enter the Survival portion, while all other teams face elimination.

In the Survival stage, eight teams enter a best-of-4 matchup. This is a single-elimination bracket, so they can’t afford to lose. By the end of this period, only four teams will remain.

Next, the Playoffs will begin. Most of these matches, which include 8 teams, will be best-of-three. The big exception is the Grand Final, which is a longer best-of-five event.

  • Group Stage: July 7 – July 12
  • Survival Stage: July 14 – July 16
  • Playoffs: July 16 – July 19
  • Grand Final: July 19
