After the recent chicken update forced players to choose between feeding their virtual animals and getting cases, one CS2 player is holding their pet Greg hostage until Valve fixes the game’s anticheat. Here’s everything we know about the ongoing situation.

CS2 Redditor Holds Chicken Pet Greg Hostage

Earlier in September, Valve made one of the biggest (and cutest) additions to Counter-Strike yet. The game added new Chicken Pets, which players can hatch from eggs and grow into companions that they can take into the game. You can also put silly hats on them and take pictures in a photobooth, because why not?

There’s one sad drawback: the chickens have a set lifespan, and they pass on after several months. In addition, you need to feed your chickens, and if you fail to do so, they die earlier. You prevent this by giving them Chicken Feed, which takes up both your loot slots. This means you can’t get cases and also feed your chicken pet. (We have a full guide to them here.)

Of course, CS2 players are taking this in the most sane and normal way possible. We have now reached a point where an r/cs2 user is holding their chick named Greg hostage, threatening to let him starve if Valve doesn’t fix the game’s anticheat.

An Open Letter to Valve: ‘If You Want Him to Live, Fix the Game’

The user, Forbesh22, posted an adorable picture of Greg in a birthday hat before beginning their letter, titled “open letter to valve from a player whose chicken is about to die.”

“Dear Valve,” they started. “I got a chicken egg in my weekly drop earlier this month. I was happy about it. First thing in this game that made me happy in a while honestly. It hatched, it’s there on the main menu, I named him greg.”

However, then the story takes a dark turn:

“Then the feed dropped and i had to choose between feeding greg or getting a case, and i realised this is the first time in years Valve has given me any power over anything in this game. I can’t stop the cheaters. Reporting does nothing. The “anticheat improvements” in the patch notes don’t change a single thing in my actual matches, I’m still getting the same guys tracking me through smokes every other game. But Greg? Greg’s fate is in my hands. So i’m not feeding him.”

“I know it’s not fair to greg. None of this is fair. That’s kind of the whole point.”

“If you want him to live, fix the game. Not another patch note, actually fix it. Until then Greg starves and you can explain to the community why you had time to build a chicken photo booth but not a working anticheat.”

Forbesh22 warns the community that they have “6,405 hours and no faith left.”

They added an edit to close out their statement: “Greg’s not real. I know. Neither is your anticheat.”

Community Reactions

At the time of writing, the post has surpassed 6,300 upvotes. Netizens are reacting with a mixture of shock, humor, support, and concern.

“All they had to do was make the feed one of your choices instead of two for the week. You already sacrificed both choices last week to get Greg,” the most upvoted reply reads.

“And this week, I sacrifice Greg,” the OP replied.

Another user commented, “Man we already got manifestos about the chickens.”

u/Dammit_Tree asks, “WHY DID GABEN DO THIS TO GREG??!?”

We reached out to the OP, who stated they had “no additional comments,” but warned: “the ball is in Valve’s court.”

The Counter-Strike community eagerly awaits an update on Greg’s fate. Will he survive the hostage situation, or will he tragically depart this virtual plane? We’ll have to wait and see.
