Counter-Strike 2 may be getting its first new primary weapon in years, and it looks like a lever-action rifle. A new weapon called the “LAR” has appeared in the game files of Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) after Valve pushed the October 28 update. Here’s everything we know about what the LAR is, how it could play and whether it will actually make it into the game.

What Is the LAR in CS2?

The LAR looks like a lever-action rifle, similar to a classic Winchester-style gun. Players work a lever after each shot to load the next bullet. Many in the community read “LAR” as short for “Lever-Action Rifle,” but Valve has not confirmed the name or what it stands for.

From the files and the model, the weapon appears to have these traits:

  • Lever-action firing: the player works the lever after each shot while aiming.
  • One-at-a-time reloading: bullets are loaded individually, like the Nova or XM1014 shotguns.
  • Light zoom: it uses a holographic-style sight with mild zoom, closer to the AUG or SG 553 than to a full sniper scope.
  • Rifle category: earlier data listed it as a rifle, not a sniper rifle.

How the Leak Developed

The weapon first appeared under a different name.

  • September 23, 2026 (Rush Hour update): Dataminers found a “weapon_m14” entry in the file “weapons.vdata”. It had stats but no model, no display name and no entry in “items_game.txt”, and a setting blocked players from picking it up.
  • October 22, 2026: The “weapon_m14” stats were removed from weapons.vdata.
  • October 28, 2026: The full model, animations and buy-menu icon appeared, along with the “LAR” label.

As mentioned above, the latest CS2 update on October 28 added a full weapon model named “weapon_rif_lar”. It also added first- and third-person animations for drawing, idle, shooting through the sights, reloading and silent reloading, along with a buy-menu icon. The animation skeleton is now labeled “LAR.” The textures sit in a folder named do_not_ship, which Valve commonly uses to mark unfinished assets.

LAR Leaked Stats

Here’s a quick overview of leaked LAR stats:

  • Price: $4,100
  • Base damage: 115
  • Headshot multiplier: 4×
  • Armor ratio: 1.95
  • Range modifier: 0.945
  • Magazine size: 5
  • Reserve ammo: 5
  • Time between shots: ~1.85 seconds
  • Movement speed (normal / aiming): 200 / 130
  • Zoom: Iron sights / mild aim-down-sights
  • Kill reward: $100

The numbers above come from the temporary M14 entry that was live between September and October 22. Many values, including damage, armor ratio, kill reward, ammo type and firing sound, were copied directly from the AWP, so they are expected to change.

The leaked stats so far describe a high-damage gun that costs less than the AWP but fires more slowly and has no proper scope. It could sit between the Scout (SSG 08) and the AWP, or work as an aggressive rifle for mid-range fights. Because many numbers are borrowed from an another existing weapon, none of this is final.

When is LAR coming to CS2?

There’s no information yet on when the new LAR weapon will be added to Counter-Strike 2 as of writing this article.

And the most unfortunate part is that it may never ship at all. Some of the reasons are:

  • The assets are incomplete, with placeholder textures and no final buy-menu name.
  • There is no skin support and no full setup for equipping the weapon.
  • Valve could cancel it, redesign it heavily, limit it to casual modes or delay it indefinitely. Not every CS2 file leak turns into a released item.

If it is released, it would be the first new primary weapon since the MP5-SD in 2018, in the CS:GO era. It would also open a new weapon slot for skins.

Finally, it’s important to note that all the information here comes from files reported by community dataminers that examined the raw weapon and model files and Valve has not confirmed anything yet. Keep an eye out for future updates.
