No strategy beats the house edge over time; these guides show how to keep it as low as possible.

Blackjack basic strategy

Your handDealer 2–6Dealer 7–Ace
Hard 12Stand on 4–6Hit
Hard 13–16StandHit
Hard 11DoubleDouble (not v Ace)
A-A or 8-8SplitSplit

With good rules this brings the edge under 1%.

Roulette

VariantEdge
French (la partage)1.35% on even money
European2.7%
American5.26%

Systems that fail

Martingale, Fibonacci and D'Alembert change how losses arrive, not the edge.

Bankroll

Set a session budget, stake 1–2% per bet, take breaks. ConnexOntario: 1-866-531-2600.

How to play slots

High RTP, volatility to match your bankroll, a session limit. See the online slots guide.

Blackjack table rules

RuleEffect
Dealer stands on soft 17Lower edge

Card counting doesn't work online, where shoes are reshuffled continuously. Skip insurance.

Myths

Machines aren't "due", wheels don't remember, and no system changes the edge.

Baccarat (banker)About 1.06%
Craps (pass line)1.41%
European roulette2.7%
Slots3–6% depending on RTP

Session planning

Set a session budget, choose a stake around 1% of it, and stop when the budget is gone or you reach your target. Take a break at least every hour; regulated sites in Ontario add reality checks for this reason.

Comparing games by cost per hour

House edge alone doesn't show what a game costs you, because pace matters. A slot at 300 spins an hour with a 4% edge costs far more per hour than a blackjack table at 60 hands with under 1%. For the same C$1 stake: slots about C$12 an hour, roulette (~40 spins, 2.7%) about C$1.08, blackjack (~60 hands, ~0.5%) about C$0.30.

Knowing when to stop

Decide your stop points before you start: a loss limit, a win target and a time limit. When you hit any of them, stop. If you find yourself breaking those rules, use self-exclusion and talk to ConnexOntario on 1-866-531-2600 or your provincial helpline.

Blackjack decisions most players get wrong

Standing on 12 against a dealer 2 or 3 (hit instead), not doubling 11 against a dealer 10 (double), splitting 10s (stand), and taking insurance (don't). Fixing those four habits removes most of the extra edge casual players give away.

Roulette bet types

Inside bets (single numbers, splits, streets) pay more and hit less often; outside bets (red/black, odd/even, dozens) pay less and hit more often. On a European wheel every bet carries the same 2.7% edge.

Bankroll in Canadian dollars

Session budgetStake (~1%)Rounds
C$100C$1~100
C$250C$2.50~100
C$500C$5~100

Stop at your loss limit or win target, whichever comes first.

Video poker basics

Video poker games such as Jacks or Better can return over 99% with correct strategy and full-pay tables. Check the paytable: a full-pay Jacks or Better pays 9 for a full house and 6 for a flush on one coin.

Craps in brief

The pass line carries a 1.41% edge; proposition bets carry much more.

Baccarat

Bet on the banker: about a 1.06% edge after commission. The player bet is close behind; the tie bet carries over 14%.

Every bet on a European wheel has the same 2.7% edge; the choice changes only how often you win and how much. On an American wheel with a double zero the edge rises to 5.26%.
