Bill C-218 made single-event sports betting legal in Canada in August 2021, and provinces decide who offers it. In Ontario, iGO-registered sportsbooks compete in an open market. Elsewhere, provincial sites (PlayNow, Mise-o-jeu, PlayAlberta, Proline+ and ALC) are the regulated options. Offshore sportsbooks accept Canadians outside those systems.

The operators on this page's cards are offshore and not registered in Ontario.

Odds 30%, markets 25% (with esports), payouts 20%, licence 15%, terms 10%.

Esports betting in Canada

Regulated and offshore books price CS2, LoL, VALORANT and Dota 2; depth varies. Map handicaps and totals are where knowledge of the game counts; see betting strategy guides.

Payments and tax

Interac, iDebit and cards are standard. Winnings aren't taxed for recreational bettors.

Atlantic provincesALC sports betting

Provincial sites cover the main North American leagues and the bigger esports events, usually with fewer prop markets than private sportsbooks.

Bet types explained

Moneyline. Pick the winner; the simplest bet. Puck line / spread. A head start for the underdog, such as -1.5 goals in hockey. Totals. Over or under goals, points or maps. Parlay. Several selections multiplied; all must win, and the margin compounds. Same-game parlay. Several selections in one game, priced with extra margin for correlation. Props. Player or team statistics, including esports kills and map props.

What makes a good betting site

Odds come first: two books can price the same NHL game differently by a few percent, and over a season that gap is most of what separates winning from losing. Then market depth, especially on esports where depth varies most, then how fast markets reopen in-play and how reliably cash out works. Bonus size matters least.

Withdrawals

Interac e-Transfer is the standard withdrawal route at regulated and most offshore books, usually within one to three business days once verified. Upload ID at sign-up so a first withdrawal isn't held.

Responsible betting

Regulated books offer deposit limits, cool-offs and provincial self-exclusion. ConnexOntario (1-866-531-2600) and GameSense provide free support.

How to compare odds yourself

Pick a match you bet on and note each bookmaker's prices on every outcome. Convert each price to an implied probability (1 ÷ odds) and add them up: the total over 100% is the margin. A bookmaker at 104% keeps far less than one at 108%, and over a season that difference matters more than any welcome offer. Repeat for a few matches before choosing your main account in Canada.

Withdrawals and verification

Every licensed bookmaker verifies your identity before paying out. Upload ID and proof of address when you register so your first withdrawal isn't held. Withdrawals usually go back to the method you deposited with; in Canada the common routes are Interac e-Transfer, iDebit / Instadebit, Debit or credit card.

Single-game betting since 2021

Until August 2021, Canadians could only bet on parlays of two or more events through provincial lotteries. The Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act changed the Criminal Code to allow single-event betting, which is what opened the door to Ontario's regulated market in April 2022 and to single-game markets on provincial sites such as PlayNow, Mise-o-jeu and Proline.

Most Ontario books let you switch between American and decimal odds in the settings. A standard -110 on both sides of a market carries about a 4.5% margin.
