Most states restrict inducements to open an account, so Australian-licensed bookmakers advertise sign-up offers less than bookmakers elsewhere, and many have moved to offers for existing customers: bonus bets, odds boosts and multi insurance. Offshore sites are outside those rules and advertise bigger offers, without the protection.

Bonus bets

A bonus bet is a stake you receive back as a token; if it wins, you get the winnings but not the stake. A A$50 bonus bet at odds of 3.00 returns A$100, not A$150. Check the minimum odds, the expiry and whether the winnings carry turnover.

Turnover requirements

Turnover is how many times a bonus must be bet before it can be withdrawn. A bonus with 3x turnover at minimum odds of 1.50 is worth much less than its face value; a bonus bet with no turnover is worth close to the stake times your strike rate.

Esports and offers

Some offers exclude esports from qualifying bets. Read the terms before using an offer on a CS2 or LoL match.

Comparing offers: checklist

  • Does the bonus pay whether your qualifying bet wins or loses?
  • What are the minimum odds?
  • Is there wagering on bonus winnings?
  • How long before it expires?
  • Are esports markets eligible?

Using offers responsibly

Offers exist to get you betting more. Decide your budget first, only claim offers that fit it, and set deposit limits before you start. Help is available from Gambling Help Online on 1800 858 858.

Bonus bets vs cash: what the difference means

A bonus bet is site credit, not cash. When it wins you get the winnings but not the stake, so a A$20 bonus bet at odds of 3.00 returns A$40 rather than A$60. That's why bonus bets are worth less than their face value and why longer odds use them better. Cash refunds, where a book returns a losing stake as withdrawable money, are worth more, and are worth seeking out when they're offered.

Free bet value at a glance

Free betAt odds 2.00At odds 3.00At odds 5.00

A$25A$25A$50A$100
A$50A$50A$100A$200

The stake isn't returned, so winnings equal stake × (odds − 1).

Offers and local rules in Australia

Bookmakers licensed by state and territory regulators (most bookmakers by the NT Racing Commission) follow local rules on inducements and advertising, which can limit sign-up offers. The value of any offer is in its terms, not its headline.

Ongoing offers worth using

Price boosts on markets you'd bet anyway, early payout offers on football, and bet-builder boosts all add value without changing how you bet. Ignore offers that push you towards bets you wouldn't otherwise place.

Free bets on esports

Some free bet terms exclude esports markets. Check the eligible sports before placing a free bet on a CS2 or LoL match.

Inducement rules in Australian states

Several states ban or restrict inducements to open an account or to bet more, and national rules restrict how betting is advertised. That's why licensed Australian bookmakers lean on bonus bets for existing customers and odds boosts rather than large sign-up bonuses.

Bonus bets explained

A bonus bet's stake isn't returned: a A$50 bonus bet at 3.00 pays A$100 if it wins. Turnover requirements on bonus bet winnings reduce their value further.

State rules on inducements

Several states restrict how bookmakers can advertise or offer inducements such as bonus bets, and some limit offers to people who already hold an account. Licensed bookmakers have scaled back sign-up offers as a result. Offers that look unusually generous may come from offshore sites that are not licensed in Australia.

Australian rules on betting offers

Most states and territories ban offering bonus bets or other inducements to open an account or to refer a friend, so sign-up bonuses are rare from licensed Australian bookmakers. Offers you will still see include odds boosts and promotions for existing customers. Read the terms for the maximum stake, the markets included and whether winnings are paid as cash or as bonus bets.

Questions

Are free bets real money?
Bonus bet winnings are paid as cash (sometimes with turnover); the stake is not returned.
Why don't Australian bookmakers offer big sign-up bonuses?
Several states restrict inducements to open an account. Offshore offers are larger because they ignore those rules.
Do bonus bets return the stake?
No. You receive the winnings only.
How much is a A$50 bonus bet worth?
Roughly A$24 to A$38 in expected value, depending on the odds you use it at.
Can I withdraw a bonus bet?
No. Only winnings from it can be withdrawn, subject to any turnover requirement.
Do offers apply to esports?
Usually, subject to minimum odds and market rules.
