AFL Betting 2026: Markets, Odds and Tips
AFL betting covers every game of the season, from head-to-head and line betting to disposals and goal-kicker markets. This guide explains AFL betting markets, how odds and margins work, where Australians can bet legally and what to look for in a bookmaker for footy.
How we score
The AFL season runs from March to the Grand Final in late September, with nine games most rounds. It is Australia's most bet-on winter sport.
Where to bet legally
Betting on sport in Australia is legal with bookmakers licensed by a state or territory regulator, most often the Northern Territory Racing Commission. Licensed bookmakers must be connected to BetStop, the national self-exclusion register, and can't take online in-play bets on sport; in-play betting is only allowed by phone or in person. We'll add a ranking of licensed bookmakers for AFL once our Australian bookmaker list is complete; our betting sites Australia page covers the options.
AFL betting markets
| Market | What you bet on |
|---|---|
| Head to head | Which team wins |
| Line | Winner with a points handicap |
| Total points | Over or under a set total |
| First goal kicker / anytime goal kicker | Which player kicks a goal |
| Disposals | Player over or under a disposal count |
| Margin bands | Winning margin in ranges, such as 1–39 |
| Futures | Premiership, Brownlow Medal, top four |
How the odds work
Australian bookmakers show decimal odds: A$10 at 2.50 returns A$25 including your stake. To compare bookmakers, add the inverse of the odds on a two-way market: 1.90 and 1.90 give about 105.3%, a margin of 5.3%. Lower is better for you.
Tips for AFL betting
- Check team lists released before each round: late outs change the line.
- Weather matters: wet games usually mean lower totals.
- Travel and venue: interstate travel and ground size affect results.
- Compare lines: small differences add up over a season.
- Avoid long multis: every leg adds margin.
Offers and the inducement rules
Most states and territories ban bonus bets or other inducements to open an account, so sign-up bonuses are rare. Licensed bookmakers still run odds boosts and promotions for existing customers; read the terms for maximum stake and whether winnings are paid as cash or bonus bets.
Responsible betting
Set a budget, use deposit limits and take breaks. You can self-exclude from all licensed bookmakers at once through BetStop, and Gambling Help Online offers free support on 1800 858 858.
How AFL lines and totals are set
Bookmakers start from team ratings and adjust for venue, travel, rest and team news. Interstate travel and unfamiliar grounds matter more in the AFL than in most sports, and ground size changes scoring: smaller venues tend to produce higher totals. Lines move most after team selections on Thursday and late outs before the first bounce.
Player markets
| Market | What it means | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Anytime goal kicker | Player kicks at least one goal | Key forwards and small forwards most likely |
| Disposals | Player's kicks plus handballs over or under a line | Check role changes and tags |
| Marks and tackles | Player totals over or under a line | Weather affects marks |
| Brownlow votes | Votes in a match or season | Umpires favour midfielders |
AFL betting calendar
| Period | What happens | Betting focus |
|---|---|---|
| March | Opening Round | Futures widest, form unknown |
| June–July | Bye rounds | Fewer games, fresher teams |
| August | Run home | Top eight races |
| September | Finals and Grand Final | Biggest markets of the year |
Margin betting
Margin markets ask you to pick the winning margin band, such as a team by 1–39 or 40+. They pay more than head-to-head because they're harder to land. Look at each team's typical winning margins and the conditions: a wet day compresses margins, a fast dry track at a big ground can stretch them.
Bankroll basics for a season
A season has around 200 games plus finals. Decide a weekly budget, keep stakes level rather than chasing losses, and track your bets so you know whether a strategy works. Most players lose over a season because of the bookmaker's margin, so treat betting as paid entertainment.
AFL futures and Brownlow
Futures markets let you bet on the premiership, the top four or eight, and individual awards such as the Brownlow Medal and the Coleman Medal. Prices move through the season as injuries and form change. Futures tie up your money for months and carry higher margins than single games, so keep stakes small.
Same-game multis
Most bookmakers offer same-game multis that combine head-to-head, line and player markets from one match. They pay more because each leg must win, and the margin grows with every leg. Treat them as entertainment rather than value.
AFL betting tips
- Team lists: check selections on Thursday and final changes before the bounce.
- Weather: wet games lower totals and favour contested-ball teams.
- Venue: the MCG, Optus Stadium and the Gabba play differently; interstate travel matters.
- Line value: small differences in the line add up over a season.
- Short multis: keep combined bets to two or three legs.
