How we score
Online sports betting is legal in Australia with a bookmaker licensed by a state or territory regulator, most of them by the Northern Territory Racing Commission. Licensed bookmakers must join BetStop, cannot take credit cards or crypto for online betting, and cannot take in-play bets online (in-play is phone only). Offshore operators that take Australian bets do so without a licence, outside all of those rules.
The operator set for this page lists offshore brands, shown on the cards above with their licences. If you want an Australian-licensed bookmaker, check the licence on the operator's site against the NT Racing Commission or your state regulator.
How we compare betting sites
Odds carry 30% of the score, measured as the average margin across the same ten events. Markets carry 25%, with esports depth counted: CS2, League of Legends, VALORANT and Dota 2. Payouts carry 20%, measured by a real withdrawal. Licence carries 15%. Terms and support carry 10%.
Esports betting in Australia
Australian-licensed bookmakers price the major esports events, mostly match winners and map handicaps, with deeper markets at the bigger books. Because in-play online betting is banned for licensed operators, live esports markets at Australian books are phone-only. That gap is one reason offshore sites market themselves to esports punters, with the loss of protection that comes with it.
Australian rules that affect you
- No credit cards: banned for online wagering with licensed bookmakers since June 2024, and the ban extends to crypto.
- BetStop: one registration self-excludes you from every licensed bookmaker. It does not reach offshore sites.
- No in-play online: licensed bookmakers take live bets by phone only.
- Tax: winnings are not taxed for recreational punters.
How to compare odds yourself
Pick a match you bet on and note each bookmaker's prices on every outcome. Convert each price to an implied probability (1 ÷ odds) and add them up: the total over 100% is the margin. A bookmaker at 104% keeps far less than one at 108%, and over a season that difference matters more than any welcome offer. Repeat for a few matches before choosing your main account in Australia.
Withdrawals and verification
Every licensed bookmaker verifies your identity before paying out. Upload ID and proof of address when you register so your first withdrawal isn't held. Withdrawals usually go back to the method you deposited with; in Australia the common routes are PayID, Debit card, Neosurf.
Esports betting at bookmakers in Australia
Licensed bookmakers price the majors but must take in-play bets by phone. The depth varies: some books offer only match winners, others add map handicaps, totals and round markets on CS2 and VALORANT. If esports is your focus, open an account where those deeper markets exist and compare prices on the same matches.
Customer support
Good support answers within minutes by chat, with specific answers rather than scripts. We test each bookmaker with questions about verification, an offer term and a delayed withdrawal before ranking it.
The national consumer protection framework
Licensed bookmakers must follow the National Consumer Protection Framework for online wagering: BetStop, deposit limits, activity statements, consistent responsible-gambling messaging and a ban on credit betting.
Payment methods after the credit card ban
Since June 2024, licensed Australian wagering providers cannot accept credit cards or crypto. That leaves debit cards, PayID and Osko, bank transfer, BPAY and e-wallets such as PayPal, depending on the bookmaker. If you see a "bookmaker" taking credit cards or crypto from Australians, it is not operating under an Australian licence.
What the national framework gives you
Licensed bookmakers must apply the National Consumer Protection Framework, which includes:
- An option to set a binding deposit limit, which can be lowered immediately but only raised after a waiting period.
- Monthly activity statements showing your wins, losses and fees.
- No lines of credit and no payday loan advertising alongside betting.
- Self-exclusion through BetStop, the national register, which covers every licensed bookmaker at once.
