“I Deserve to Play at Champions Shanghai”: Team Liquid Purp0 and GSR Swap Drama Explained

After qualifying for Champions Shanghai, Team Liquid has just made one of the riskiest roster moves possible. Two weeks before the year’s most important VALORANT event kicks off, they’ve swapped core roster member purp0 for academy player GSR. Is this a big play or a big mistake? Team Liquid Swaps Purp0 for Academy Player Two Weeks Before Champions Shanghai

VCT EMEA has seen the most plot twists of perhaps any VALORANT region in 2026. First, the circuit was overrun with VCL teams, with Fire Flux Esports and Enterprise Esports making it extremely far through the Playoffs. Now, after qualifying for Champions Shanghai through the tournament, Team Liquid is swapping out one of its core players just two weeks before the event starts.

Playing in Champions is the pinnacle of a VALORANT athlete’s success. It’s the ultimate goal for many who make esports their career, devoting hours to practice and playtime.

Team Liquid’s Statement

On September 9 2026, Team Liquid announced that academy player GSR would replace Semyon “purp0” Borchev on its roster. GSR would notably take purp0’s spot in Champions Shanghai.

“We’ve made the decision to move GSR into our starting roster, replacing Purp0.” Team Liquid elaborated: “GSR has been extremely impressive, and we’re confident this move gives us the best opportunity for success at Champions Shanghai.

At the same time, we want to recognize what Purp0 has meant to this team. He’s been a rock for us throughout the year. Consistently putting the team first, embracing whatever role was needed, and giving us the flexibility to compete at our best. We’re incredibly grateful for everything he’s brought to Team Liquid this year.

As we head into Champions 2026 and beyond, we ask that you continue to support all parties through this transition.”

Who is GSR?

Ognjen “GSR” Bondžić, an 18-year-old flex player, has been on Team Liquid’s Academy lineup since 2025. He has significant experience on several roles, but notably plays Duelist well.

GSR posted about his excitement to join the team on X.com: “It was always my dream to play in tier 1 and to get to begin my journey in champs is [an] honor and a privilege. I will do my best to reward the faith and trust placed in me by my team, by giving it 100%.”

Purp0 Speaks Out

Immediately after Liquid’s announcement, purp0 took to X.com to express his feelings. “I deserve to play at Champions Shanghai,” he asserted.

The young Duelist did not hide his disappointment. “sh-t happens,” purp0 wrote. “But it is what it is.”

Netizens also came out in droves to defend purp0, largely agreeing he should have a right to play in Champions. Typically, teams keep at least three members of their original yearly roster when entering the tournament. Many users argued that because purp0’s performance throughout the year contributed to Team Liquid earning a spot, he deserved to stay on the lineup.

Eintracht Frankfurt player Unfair popped out to say his piece:

“As a player, when you pour your heart and soul into a team, fight your way to 2nd place in EMEA, only to be replaced right before Champs, it has to be one of the biggest betrayals and breaches of trust you can experience as a player.“

Meanwhile, industry expert @TrickVAL said, “Bro qualified to champs and got replaced before the event… I’d be sick man that can’t be right.”

Why Did Team Liquid Lohan Swap Purp0 Out?

As Team Liquid’s coach, Ivo ‘LohaN’ Albino takes much of the responsibility for the unexpected player swap. Albino was candid about the move, calling it “the hardest decision I ever had to make as coach.”

“I understand many people might not agree with this direction, and that’s fair to be angry. […] I understand it was an unfair decision, and at the end of the day, Semyon deserved to be in champs.”
