Gen.G VALORANT had a great year in 2024, but its recent performances have slumped. Amidst the VCT 2026 season, the team has signed two former Academy players to its main roster. Here’s everything to know about the move.

Gen.G VALORANT Announces New Roster Member Efina

On July 9, 2026, VALORANT team Gen.G announced it was adding a new player to its core lineup: Kim “Efina” Nak-yeon. The org had procured his contract from rival Korean org T1, which also fields a VALORANT roster and recently won Masters Bangkok 2026.

In the reveal, Gen.G wrote that, “Bringing his incredible talent to the roster, [Efina] will move forward as an official member of the team. Please join us in cheering for Efina as he takes on this new challenge with Gen.G.”

Previously, Efina was a T1 Academy player. Esports orgs typically keep an Academy team so they have a constant stream of fresh players joining the main string when members leave or retire. Academy teams typically receive consistent, very similar training, so their players tend to fit right in if they get a promotion. Sometimes, they will even scrim with the main roster to prepare them for tournaments.

Gen.G Promotes RaxcaL to Main Roster

Kim “RaxcaL” Min-seok, who has played on the Gen.G Academy team for the past 5 months, was the next player to join its main roster. In an X.com post announcing his promotion, Gen.G commented:

“We’re excited to announce the call-up of “RaxcaL” Minseok Kim to the Gen.G VALORANT main roster. We ask for your support as he steps up to take on this next stage in his career!

What Does This Mean for Gen.G VALORANT?

Gen.G has a long-lasting legacy. The org is already known in the League of Legends sphere for being a fierce opponent. The team gave rise to household-name players like Chovy and Ruler and has won several Mid-Season Invitationals (MSI). However, Gen.G has never won a Worlds under its current team name. It also has a distinct rivalry with fellow South Korean org T1. Gen.G’s acquisition of Efina from T1 Academy is notable for this reason.

T1 secured a place in VALORANT history after winning Masters Bangkok 2025 the same year as their Worlds 2025 victory. For a brief period, the org held international victories in two Riot Games titles simultaneously. It had proved its League of Legends players were not the only stars in the esports world.

Gen.G is doing the same, elevating its VALORANT roster at lightning speed to match its existing reputation. 2024 was the organization’s best year so far. It won Masters Shanghai and Pacific Kickoff and Stage 2, also placing 2nd in Masters Madrid and Pacific Stage 1. However, the momentum didn’t last: the team just barely missed out on several key trophies in 2025, and is placing near the bottom of the leaderboard in VCT Pacific events. Gen.G is looking to regain its stride, and these roster changes could be what the organization needs.
