In just a few days, Overwatch will get a major update. Season 5: A Grim Doctrine is coming soon, and it has a new hero, a new Escort map, and a big Sombra rework. Here’s how to watch the trailer, a recap of the release date, and a quick rundown of what to expect.

We already met Doctrine, the new Overwatch hero, during a limited-time trial in September. He’s a Support character, with healing drones and an Ultimate that grants allies overhealth. We have a full guide to his abilities and lore here, so check that out if you missed the event.

When we first saw Doctrine in the introduction cinematic, Doomfist, Sombra, Widowmaker and Reaper rescued him from a mysterious prison. He has deep ties to talon, and this will probably continue in his Season 5 storyline. In fact, the entire Season 5 theme is ‘A Grim Doctrine,’ centering around the new hero.

New Escort Map Watchpoint: Grímsvötn

The season also introduces Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, a new Escort map set in an icy Icelandic prison tied directly to Doctrine’s backstory with Doomfist.

Roadhog and Sombra Reworks

Alongside the new hero and map, Roadhog and Sombra are both getting reworks, rounding out one of the biggest content drops of the year as Reign of Talon pushes toward its next chapter. Sombra is becoming a Support hero, shifting away from her DPS roots. This has become one of Overwatch’s most controversial updates. Here’s a quick guide to the Sombra Support rework. Meanwhile, Roadhog changes will make it harder for him to one-shot enemies.

The next Overwatch update, Season 5: A Grim Doctrine, will launch on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.

The exact rollout time for the patch may vary depending on the player’s location and server region. Typically, Overwatch times these changes for periods with low player counts, like the early morning hours. Sometimes, Blizzard offers a pre-download option for the patch. This appears in a little green download arrow icon below the Battle.net client’s ‘play’ button.
