Worlds 2026 is finally here, and regional rivalries are intensifying. In the tournament’s Swiss Stage opener, LPL teams have gone 0-4, sparking conversation. Plus, we’ve seen some surprise upsets. Here’s a quick recap.

LPL Goes 0-4 at Worlds 2026: A First in Swiss Stage History

The LoL Pro League (LPL) had a rough opening day at Worlds 2026. All four Chinese teams lost their first Swiss Stage match on October 23. This is reportedly the first time in League history that the region has gone winless in a Worlds Swiss opener.

Usually, the LPL is known as one of the game’s stronger competitive regions alongside the LCK. This year, four LPL orgs are in the running:

  • Bilibili Gaming (BLG): Bin, Xun, Knight, Viper, ON
  • Invictus Gaming: TheShy, Wei, Rookie, JiaQi, Meiko
  • Anyone’s Legend: Breathe, Tarzan, Shanks, Hope, Kael
  • TOP Esports: 369, Tian, Creme, JackeyLove, Zhou

Anyone’s Legend, Bilibili Gaming, Top Esports, and Invictus Gaming all lost in Round 1. Karmine Corp, Movistar KOI, Hanwha Life Esports, and Gen.G beat them respectively.

How the Swiss Stage Works

Sixteen teams play in the Swiss Stage. It has five rounds.

  • Teams with three wins progress to the knockout stage.
  • Teams with three losses face elimination.
  • Most matches are best-of-one.
  • Matches that decide advancement or elimination are best-of-three and use Fearless Draft.

A team that starts 0-1 can only afford one more loss. This means the LPL teams are under extra pressure, since any slip-up could have big progression consequences.

Movistar KOI Defeats BLG: Huge Upset

Notably, Movistar KOI’s win over BLG kicked off Worlds with one of the most unexpected upsets of 2026. MKOI beat BLG in the Swiss Stage opener on October 23.

BLG went into Worlds as one of the season’s top competitors, winning First Stand and taking home two LPL splits. As the LPL’s second seed, many fans saw them as a title favorite.

Meanwhile, MKOI had never won their first match at a Worlds before. Still, they held firm through a tense 39-minute game. Botlane was a big part of this battle: Supa performed well on Ezreal (during his birthday), which gave MKOI an early edge. BLG’s support, ON, played Seraphine, a Champion he’d picked 20 times with only one loss. However, MKOI pushed ahead.

BLG attempted to make a comeback, but MKOI stayed calm. The org clutched the final Elder fight, closing the tournament out. The loss reaffirmed a narrowing gap between EMEA and traditionally dominant regions, showing that Europe can beat China’s best at Worlds 2026.

The LCK is 4-0

Meanwhile, the LCK is enjoying a better start. Every LCK team kicked off Worlds 2026 with a Swiss victory, but can the region snowball this momentum further?

  • Gen.G beat IG.
  • Hanwha Life Esports beat TES.
  • T1 beat LOS.
  • Dplus KIA beat G2.

T1‘s win against LOS was a particularly strong showing. Faker and teammates are fighting to continue the org’s three-year Worlds win streak, and their Swiss Opener performance showed it. This was a sweep, ending in just 24 minutes with a 19-3 kill score.

Dplus KIA’s win against G2 was more tentative. The LCK org managed a late comeback after starting the game at a disadvantage.

Why Did The LPL Struggle in the Worlds 2026 Swiss Stage Opener?

It’s hard to pinpoint one exact reason behind the regional struggle. There are several main factors, and it’s more of a team-by-team thing: each LPL org is facing different issues.

  • First of all, the Swiss matches are best-of-one, which leaves room for variance. If teams are having an off day, this measures their one-time performance instead of consistency over multiple games.
  • Top Esports had missing players: the team played without ZUIAN. That deals a blow to any roster’s communications and chemistry.
  • Draft choices were lacking in some areas, especially the BLG matchup. They made risky picks against MKOI, possibly believing their stronger standing would carry them through. This decision might have been what cost them the win in the close game.
  • Gen.G and HLE, which Top Esports and Invictus faced, were some of the LCK’s strongest competitors. This seed would have been difficult for teams from any region.
  • Fans have high expectations for the LPL, since the region hasn’t secured a Worlds win since 2021. There’s a lot of pressure on qualified teams.

Remember that this is only one round. A bad opening doesn’t decide the tournament, and there’s plenty of time for the LPL to make a comeback. That said, the Worlds 2026 storylines are already building, and fans are watching closely.
