ARAM Mayhem got its Journey to Stardom update in Patch 26.21, and the 35 new augments are not the biggest change.
Every game now runs under a Headliner. Each band twists the rules of that match, plays its own music while you fight, and changes what you should be doing. The mode no longer has one rule set.
How the Headliner system works
Riot confirmed eight bands, then ended the list with “And more to come????”, so expect additions.
- K/DA: collect 4 K/DA Cards, earn an extra augment
- HEARTSTEEL: augments can roll with modifiers that make them stronger
- True Damage: takedowns and tower kills can drop Anvils for your team
- Pentakill: one ability gets stronger at the start and again at level 18
- Disco: dance under the disco ball, everyone earns gold
- Cafe Cuties: health relics hit far harder
- Bees: collect honey pots, dodge the bees crossing the map
- Command Line: reroll one augment into a higher tier every selection
Read those as strategies rather than flavour. Command Line upgrades your whole augment pool. K/DA turns map objectives into a fifth augment. Disco rewards a team that stops fighting to dance, which is a strange thing to optimise around.
Riot has not said how a match picks its Headliner. That is the one question everyone will have on day one.
Superstar Ranks
Journey to Stardom adds a progression track on top.
You complete missions from K/DA, Pentakill and other bands. Those unlock augments, emotes, orange essence and more. Playing games and finishing missions raises your Superstar Rank, which opens new bands and new missions on the way from Newbie to Superstar.
Riot has not published rank thresholds, so nobody outside Riot knows how long the climb takes.
Every new ARAM Mayhem augment
Thirty-five in total: 10 Silver, 19 Gold and 6 Prismatic.
Silver augments
- Blue Barrier: cast an ability, gain a shield. Mana cost sets the size.
- Flow of Spirit: one specific ability stacks attack speed.
- Fruitify: takedowns drop fruit. You and your allies eat it to heal.
- Gift of the Drowned: all bonus health from items turns into lethality.
- Hands Off The Talent: attacks from max range hit harder.
- Lich Brain: bonus health gives you ability power.
- Lonely Warrior: every nearby enemy champion gives you armour, magic resist and attack speed.
- No Mana, No Problem: all mana from items turns into ability power.
- Sound Barrier: your shields also grant move speed.
- Ultimate Recursion: gain 50 Ultimate Ability Haste.
Gold augments
- Arcane Axiom: takedowns refund part of your Ultimate cooldown.
- Armored Impact: after an ability, your next attack adds damage from your armour.
- BEES!!!: your abilities sometimes fling an exploding beehive that damages, slows and applies on-hit effects.
- Brass Blast: a summoner spell. Charge a horn blast that knocks enemies back.
- CRIMSON COBALT: one ability marks champions. Consume the mark for extra damage and a cooldown refund.
- Double Time: hit a champion with two abilities quickly for permanent mana and extra damage.
- Enchanting Butterflies: heal or shield allies to summon butterflies. Enough of them fly at enemies you damage.
- Get Jinxed: a summoner spell. Ride a rocket into your enemies.
- Heavy Is The Crown: more AD, AP and attack speed, less move speed. Takedowns raise it, deaths lower it.
- Jeweled Bracelet: your Ultimate can critically strike.
- Recoil: one ability launches you backwards when you fire it.
- Salvation: drop to low health and you push enemies back and heal allies.
- Sap Magic: every 10 seconds, your next attack deals extra damage and heals you.
- Still Here: the lower your health, the more AD, AP and lifesteal you get.
- Take’em Down Down Down: damage a champion five times for a burst of healing and damage.
- The Boom and the Bass: after an ability, your next attack adds damage and move speed.
- Tickle Monster: all attack damage from items turns into attack speed.
- Upgrade: Stormsurge: Squall now detonates in an area and marks enemies with a second Squall.
- Weapon Of Destiny: your first Legendary item grows stronger with every takedown.
Prismatic augments
- Big Shot: a large chunk of your attack speed turns into critical strike damage.
- Bouncing Bees: after an ability, your next attack bounces to nearby enemies. A quest adds more bounces and AD.
- Group Hug: one heal or shield ability also hits nearby allies.
- Mosh Monster: your Ultimate grants health and drops a slow zone. Takedowns grow both.
- Third Times The Harm: attack a champion three times for burst damage and attack speed.
- Totentanz: a summoner spell granting 5 seconds of immortality. No takedown in that window and you go to the underworld.
Try Totentanz first. A five-second immortality window with a punishment attached is the most interesting risk and reward design in the set.
Which augments did Riot remove?
Thirteen leave the pool, and some of them had a following.
- Combusting Interest
- Crit ‘n Cast
- Critical Missile
- Dimension Shift
- DropBear
- Dropkick
- Fan the Hammer
- Hide on Bush
- High Roller
- Our Healing
- Poro Stampede
- Spiritual Purification
- Ult Bot
Riot wishes them a fond farewell and leaves the door open for an encore. That is the usual wording for a rotation rather than a deletion, so expect some of them back.
Two maps are missing from ARAM Mayhem
This is the practical detail most coverage will skip.
Butcher’s Bridge and Koeshin’s Crossing both drop out of ARAM Mayhem queues for this patch. Riot says the concert stages take longer to build on those two, and both return next patch.
So if you queue Mayhem over the next fortnight, you play a reduced map pool whether you wanted to or not.
Is Journey to Stardom worth playing?
If you already queue ARAM Mayhem, yes, and the Headliners are the reason rather than the augments.
Thirty-five new augments is a content number. Eight rule sets that change what a game is about is a design change, and it makes the mode much harder to solve. A build that wins under Pentakill is not obviously the build that wins under Cafe Cuties.
The honest caveat is that we do not know how a match picks its Headliner, how long the Superstar climb runs, or whether the band missions ask something reasonable. Those three answers decide whether this lasts a week or a season.
The same patch brings the True Damage Know My Name skins, which is no coincidence given True Damage is one of the Headliners. Our Patch 26.21 breakdown covers the champion and item changes, and the K/DA music release explains why half the bands in this mode are having a moment.
