The Marvel Rivals community spoke out about the title’s approach to toxic players, and now the game is issuing a stricter moderation policy. Toxic speech, harassment, and hate speech will have longer punishments, and players have a new moderation page to keep track of the rules. Here’s everything to know.
September 2026 was not Marvel Rivals’ proudest month. The game went through controversy after quietly removing its hate speech reporting options, and also earned criticism after content creators posted clips of dehumanizing experiences in voice chat. Some users were banned for defending themselves in comms, while other toxic players got no bans.
The viral moments, which occurred shortly after a previous Storm skin incident, led many content creators to return to Overwatch. The community waited for a response from the Marvel Rivals and NetEase teams. Now, the title has made an announcement: Marvel Rivals is returning with a stricter speech moderation policy.
On October 15, Marvel Rivals’ official X account posted an announcement:
“Greetings, Rivals!
A positive communication environment is a vital component of any team-based competitive experience. We have always prioritized speech moderation in-game, and we continue to pay close attention to your feedback regarding toxic behavior. Whether through text or voice chat, behaviors such as insults, malicious harassment, discrimination, and hate speech not only hurt other players but also destroy normal in-game communication and the overall match experience.
Recently, we have further escalated our penalties for speech violations. For verified offenses, we implement appropriate disciplinary actions based on the nature, severity, and historical record of the violation. We will enforce significantly harsher penalties against players involved in severe offenses or repeated violations.”
Marvel Rivals has also created a website explaining its moderation policies, so things are clearer for players.
The dev team reiteratied:
“We respect the right of our players to express differing opinions, but normal communication and discussion should never become an excuse for malicious attacks, discrimination, or the harassment of others. Our stance on moderating toxic speech is clear and resolute. We will absolutely not treat these behaviors as acceptable simply because they are unfortunately common in competitive gaming.
Speech moderation is an ongoing, long-term commitment. Moving forward, we will continually refine our systems for identifying, reviewing, and penalizing toxic speech to constantly improve the game’s communication environment. We also encourage all players to actively use the reporting function when encountering speech violations.”
Marvel Rivals makes it clear what is prohibited speech on their official moderation website. Anything in these categories counts, and could get you a ban:
Marvel Rivals’ toxic speech penalties vary depending on how many times the user has faced punishment. They also consider how severe the offense was. The game states: “We escalate disciplinary actions based on the severity and frequency of the behavior. Penalties may begin with warnings and escalate to mutes and matchmaking restrictions.”
Players can get these punishments:
In the October 15 update, the NetEase team also confirmed that punishments will increase for players who use mods and configs in Marvel Rivals. This is because “these methods employ the exact same or similar technical maneuvers as cheat engines, they instantly trigger our Anti-Cheat detection mechanisms. Furthermore, some Mods alter the game’s original visual, auditory, and combat presentation, severely jeopardizing the fairness of the game.”
Banned mods include:
This new policy goes into effect immediately. Marvel Rivals had a huge ban wave for mods over the past two days, but since the rules were unclear until now, the team has lifted these suspensions. Anyone using mods from this point on, though, will face penalties.
Marvel Rivals has an automated text and speech detection system that contributes to its bans. This system reportedly analyzes ‘semantics and context’ to also take different situations into account and avoid false punishments. The game writes:
“Our automated systems actively identify prohibited text and voice communications without relying solely on player reports. Every week, we use verified reports to update and refine these systems, continuously improving their ability to accurately detect new expressions and chat contexts to cover a broader range of violations.”
However, developers also emphasize that it’s still important for players to submit manual reports.
