Team Spirit Win The International 2026 After Losing to TEAM VISION Twice

Team Spirit began TI 2026 by failing to qualify for the main event. They lost twice trying. Then they went to an elimination round, survived it, lost again to the same team once they reached Shanghai, dropped to the lower bracket, and won every series after that.

The last of those wins was a 3-2 grand final against TEAM VISION on 23 August, against the team that had already beaten them twice. It gave Spirit a third Aegis of Champions, and it made them the first organisation in Dota 2 history to win The International three times. Valve confirmed the result in its own recap.

How Bad Did It Get Before It Got Good?

Spirit opened the Swiss stage well. First they took 2-0 wins over Xtreme Gaming and Aurora Gaming, then they beat Team Liquid 2-1, which left them a single series from qualifying directly.

They did not get it. Instead they lost 0-2 to TEAM VISION, who took the main event slot. Then they lost 0-2 again, this time to Nigma Galaxy, who took the next one.

That dropped Spirit into an elimination round against Team Resilience, a lower-seeded side that had won at least one game in every series they played. They managed it again here and forced Spirit to a deciding third game. Spirit pulled clear in the second half of it and scraped into the main event.

For a team that would end the week as three-time world champions, that is an unusually rough way to start TI 2026.

The Main Event Run

In the arena, Spirit beat Iron Wing and sent them to the lower bracket, where they eventually went out.

VISION were waiting next. The result matched the group stage closely enough: Spirit lost 1-2 and dropped down.

Team Liquid were already there. Liquid had lost only one series across the group stage, and that loss had come against Spirit. So the rematch went Spirit’s way again, and from that point they did not lose another series. BoomBoys went out 2-0. Team Yandex went out 2-0. That put Spirit in the grand final against the one team in Shanghai that had not lost a series at all.

The TI 2026 Grand Final Went the Distance

Spirit took game one comfortably and looked set to go two up, but VISION fought back to level it.

Game three went to Spirit, putting them one win from the Aegis. VISION then answered with their most convincing game of the series to force a decider.

Game five ran roughly an hour and could have broken either way until late. Eventually Spirit ground through VISION’s buybacks, and once the respawns stopped coming, the fights stopped being close.

Who Actually Lifted It

Five names now go on the Aegis:

• Illia “Yatoro” Muliarchuk
• Denis “Larl” Sigitov
• Magomed “Collapse” Khalilov
• Alexey “not_me” Kosmynin
• Alexander “rue” Filin

Yatoro and Collapse become the first players in Dota 2 to win three Internationals. Larl now has two. For not_me and rue, this was the first.

The TI 2026 Prize Pool Tells a Bigger Story Than the Result

Spirit took roughly $1.43 million.

Now put that next to the last time this organisation lifted the Aegis. Spirit won The International in 2021 and collected $18.2 million from a $40 million prize pool. Same team, same trophy, and a payout worth under eight percent of what it paid five years ago.

TI 2026 started from a $1.6 million base and crowdfunded up to roughly $3.36 million by the final. Fundraising runs to 9 September, so the figure will climb a little further. Even so, that still makes it the largest TI pool in four years, which says more about how far the event fell than about any recovery.

Meanwhile VISION took around $437,000 for second, and Team Yandex earned roughly $303,000 for third.

Puppey Still Does Not Have a Second Aegis

VISION’s defeat carries the most painful individual story of the tournament.

Clement “Puppey” Ivanov won the very first International in 2011. He then finished second in 2012, second in 2013, second in 2022, and second again in 2026. Fifteen years, four runner-up finishes, and the trophy has stayed out of reach since the beginning.

VISION arrived as clear favourites and improved on last year’s third place. That will be no comfort at all this week.

Team Falcons came in as defending champions and went out in the quarterfinals. Nigma Galaxy, who had knocked Spirit out of direct qualification, finished top six for the second year running.

The Format

TI 2026 split into two phases. The Road to The International ran a Swiss group stage from 13 to 16 August, cutting sixteen teams to eight.

The main event followed from 20 to 23 August at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center. Every series ran best-of-three through a double elimination bracket until the best-of-five grand final.

How Many People Watched?

The final peaked at just under 1.8 million concurrent viewers, and the tournament totalled around 64.5 million hours watched. Russian was the most-watched broadcast language.

Those are strong numbers for an event whose prize pool has shrunk by more than 90 percent since 2021. In short, the audience did not leave when the money did.
