IEM Cologne Major 2026: B8 Steal the Last Stage 3 Spot From BIG

Stage 2 of the IEM Cologne Major 2026 wrapped on June 9. The final ticket into Stage 3 came down to the last match standing. B8 took it. BIG, playing in front of their own German crowd, did not.

That one stings. BIG had the venue, the crowd and a clear path forward. They let it slip anyway. B8 kept their composure in the decisive series and grabbed the berth. That locks in the Stage 3 field, and the next round begins on June 11.

What the IEM Cologne Major 2026 actually is

This is the fifth Counter-Strike 2 Major and the 24th Counter-Strike Major overall. ESL runs it in Cologne, Germany from June 2 to June 21. The prize pool is 1,250,000 USD across 32 invited teams. Stage 3 plays out at the Palladium in front of a live crowd. Then the whole thing moves to the Lanxess Arena for the playoffs.

The format is three 16-team Swiss group stages into an eight-team single-elimination playoff. Sixteen teams opened in Stage 1. Eight more dropped in for Stage 2. Another eight enter straight into Stage 3 off their Valve Regional Standings. Each Swiss stage spits out eight survivors, so the field keeps shrinking down to the best rosters.

Vitality are chasing something nobody has done

Team Vitality arrived as defending champions and the team everyone is gunning for. The French roster won the BLAST.tv Austin Major and then the StarLadder Budapest Major in 2025. That made them the first side since 2019 to take two Majors in one calendar year. Win here and they make it three straight. No team in Counter-Strike has ever done that.

That is the headline. The bracket is not handing it to them, though. Team Spirit looked genuinely scary through the Swiss rounds. Most of the usual contenders are still alive too.

What comes next

Stage 3 and the playoffs run June 11 to June 21. Stage 3 fields 16 teams. That is the eight Stage 2 qualifiers plus eight top seeds who skipped the earlier rounds. Only eight of them reach the single-elimination bracket for the title. The Lanxess Arena is waiting, and 500,000 USD goes to the winner. The closing weekend is the part Cologne built its name on.
