After an opening day that crammed two full rounds of Bo1 chaos into one afternoon, IEM Cologne Major 2026 returns for day 2. IEM Cologne day 2 kicks off Round 3 around noon CEST, and the format finally shifts to best-of-three. This is the round where the bracket splits into real consequences. Win a Bo3 from the 2-0 pool and you book a Stage 2 berth at the Major. Lose from the 0-2 pool and you fly home with nothing.

Five teams sit at 2-0 heading into day 2: M80, FlyQuest, BetBoom, B8 and GamerLegion. Five sit at 0-2 facing elimination: Lynn Vision, Sharks, FlyQuest opponents from Round 2, and others on the brink. The middle 1-1 pool includes Team Liquid, THUNDER dOWNUNDER, and the rest of the field still alive but no longer untouchable.

What day 1 actually told us

Day 1 came with the kind of opening chaos Bo1 Swiss formats produce. Two full rounds got compressed into one afternoon, and the surprises stacked up faster than the broadcast could process them.

THUNDER dOWNUNDER produced the day’s biggest upset, dismantling MIBR 13-6 in their opening Bo1. The Brazilian roster were considered safe favourites by most pre-event predictions. As a result, the Australian outfit’s clean execution sent one of Stage 1’s expected advancers into the elimination bracket on day 1. MIBR now sit at 0-2 facing immediate Bo3 elimination matches.

Sharks took down HEROIC 13-10 on Nuke in the second biggest upset of the round. The Danish core’s form spiral I flagged in our day 1 preview continued exactly as feared. After dropping to 9z and Ninjas in Pyjamas in their Stake Ranked Episode 2 run, HEROIC walked into Cologne wobbling. Sharks read the moment perfectly. Lynn Vision then finished the job in Round 2, beating HEROIC 13-11 to push them to 0-2 and the brink of elimination.

The favourites who showed up delivered. Team Liquid silenced their critics with a 13-10 win against BIG on Nuke. That has to count as the most morale-shifting moment of the day for an org that needed it badly. siuhy’s “tough moment” comments before the event made that opener feel like a referendum on the roster. They survived it.

GamerLegion edged a tighter-than-expected match against NRG 13-11, then followed it up by beating FlyQuest 13-11 in Round 2 to lock in their 2-0 record. BetBoom crushed Gaimin Gladiators 13-4 in their opener, then handed Liquid their first loss 13-9 in Round 2. The CIS roster look genuinely sharp.

B8 closed out TYLOO and then beat THUNDER dOWNUNDER 13-11 in Round 2. M80 dispatched Lynn Vision 13-8 in Round 1 before steamrolling Sharks 13-6 in Round 2. <!– IN-BODY IMAGE: M80 player on stage at IEM Cologne. File: m80-player-iem-cologne-day-1.jpg. So the five 2-0 teams head into day 2 with momentum. The five 0-2 teams face elimination from their very first Bo3 of the Major.

The IEM Cologne day 2 Round 3 schedule

Round 3 matches are best-of-three from here forward. Variance drops significantly compared to yesterday’s Bo1 chaos. Teams finally get a proper map pool to demonstrate their actual level. IEM Cologne day 2 kicks off around 12:00 CEST, with eight matches running across both ESL Twitch streams through the evening.

The most consequential matchup of the day pits GamerLegion against BetBoom in the 2-0 advancement bracket. The winner books one of the first Stage 2 berths of the entire Major. Both teams are unbeaten. Both have looked sharp across two Bo1s each. As a result, this is the Round 3 matchup with the most direct competitive consequence.

The other 2-0 advancement matches pit M80 vs B8 and FlyQuest looking to extend their run. All three Bo3s deliver Stage 2 tickets to the winners. The losers drop to 2-1 and play another Bo3 in Round 4 for their advancement chance.

In the 1-1 pool, Team Liquid face MIBR in what is essentially an elimination Bo3 disguised as a survival match. Both teams need wins to stay alive. Liquid emerged from day 1 with split results (BIG win, BetBoom loss). MIBR have to rebound from their THUNDER dOWNUNDER catastrophe or pack their bags at 0-3.

THUNDER dOWNUNDER face BIG in another high-stakes Bo3, with the Australians trying to back up their MIBR upset against a German roster playing in front of a partisan crowd that has not yet seen them win.

What to watch in the elimination matches

The 0-2 pool teams play for survival. Lose Round 3 and you are eliminated from the Major entirely. Win and you stay alive in the 1-2 pool with one more Bo3 to navigate.

HEROIC vs Gaimin Gladiators is the most watched elimination storyline. Both teams arrived at Cologne with form concerns. HEROIC’s recent collapse against 9z and NIP raised serious questions. Gaimin Gladiators have lacked consistency throughout 2026. As a result, this is a “who wants it more” Bo3 where preparation and mental composure will likely decide it more than raw map pool depth.

MIBR’s recovery campaign is the other watch-this matchup. The Brazilian roster came into the Major with genuine Stage 2 ambitions. Falling out at 0-3 would be a catastrophic result for an org that has spent the year rebuilding. Therefore expect them to take Liquid extremely seriously, with map veto setting up Mirage or Inferno as their preferred battleground.

How I see IEM Cologne day 2 playing out

Eight matches, eight stories. My honest read on the day:

GamerLegion vs BetBoom is genuinely a coin flip. GamerLegion’s form looks slightly cleaner based on their two Round 1 and Round 2 wins, but BetBoom’s beatdown of Gaimin Gladiators showed real depth. I lean GamerLegion in three maps, but I will not be shocked if BetBoom takes it.

Liquid takes MIBR in three maps. The Brazilian side will probably win one map. NAF and EliGE’s individual form should carry Liquid across two. The BetBoom loss has not derailed the team’s recovery arc.

THUNDER dOWNUNDER may push BIG further than expected after their MIBR upset, but BIG’s home advantage and superior individual talent should be enough in a Bo3. The Germans advance.

M80 vs B8 is the toughest call. Both teams have looked solid through their two openers. I would lean slightly toward B8 on individual skill, but M80’s recent form is genuinely good. Coin flip.

HEROIC limp past Gaimin Gladiators on experience alone in the elimination bracket. Both teams are wobbling, but HEROIC’s Tier 1 muscle memory should be enough for one win. They will face another elimination Bo3 in Round 4 immediately.

What is at stake for IEM Cologne day 2

The first Stage 2 slots get filled today. By the end of the evening, three or four teams will have advanced to Stage 2 from Round 3 wins in the 2-0 bracket. Therefore IEM Cologne day 2 sets the chess pieces for the rest of the week.

IEM Cologne Major 2026 day 1 viewership stats 448483 peak viewers

For viewers, the broadcast quality has been outstanding. Specifically, ESL’s opening day generated a peak audience of 448,483 viewers across all platforms (excluding Chinese platforms and SteamTV). Twitch alone peaked at 268,815 concurrent viewers. In addition, YouTube added another 155,680. Furthermore, the English-language broadcast led with 170,824 peak viewers, followed by Russian at 114,928 and Portuguese at 81,971.

Specifically, the most watched matches of day 1 were M80 vs Sharks and BIG vs Gaimin Gladiators, both played in Round 2 of the Swiss bracket. As a result, expect Round 3 to push viewership even higher as the Bo3 format and elimination stakes pull in casual viewers.

The matches I will be watching most closely are GamerLegion vs BetBoom and Liquid vs MIBR. Both have stakes that go beyond their own Bo3 result. GamerLegion vs BetBoom decides which 2-0 team gets the first clean Stage 2 ticket. Liquid vs MIBR decides whether one of the highest-profile rosters at the event survives day 2 or finds themselves on the brink at 1-2.

The Cathedral remains open. Day 2 will tell us who has the legs for a full Major run, and who is heading back to the practice server.
