The wait is over. IEM Cologne Major 2026 Stage 1 day 1 kicks off today at 12:30 CEST, and the stage is set for one of the most consequential opening rounds in recent Counter-Strike memory. Sixteen teams enter Stage 1 with a single mission: survive the Swiss system, secure a spot among the top 8, and book passage into Stage 2. Eight will advance. Eight will go home.

This is the 5th CS2 Major and the 24th Major in Counter-Strike history. The prize pool sits at $1.25 million, with $500,000 reserved for the eventual champions. Cologne has hosted Counter-Strike for so long it has earned the nickname “The Cathedral.” Today, that cathedral opens its doors again.

The Stage 1 day 1 schedule

Day 1 features eight best-of-one matches across two rounds. Round 1 runs from 12:30 to 16:30 CEST. Round 2 kicks off at 17:30 and runs through to 21:30. Here is the full Round 1 lineup:

  • M80 vs Lynn Vision (12:30 CEST)
  • SINNERS vs FlyQuest (12:30 CEST)
  • B8 vs TYLOO (13:30 CEST)
  • MIBR vs THUNDER dOWNUNDER (13:30 CEST)
  • GamerLegion vs NRG (14:30 CEST)
  • HEROIC vs Sharks (14:30 CEST)
  • BetBoom vs Gaimin Gladiators (15:30 CEST)
  • BIG vs Team Liquid (15:30 CEST)

Round 2 pairings depend on Round 1 results. As a result, the bracket will not be fully visible until the first matches finish. That is the nature of Swiss-system tournaments. Teams get paired against opponents with matching records, and the chaos compounds with every map played.

The match everyone is watching: BIG vs Liquid

This is the standout opener of day 1, and it carries weight on multiple levels. First, it is a home match for BIG. The German roster will play in front of a partisan crowd that has waited two years for a hometown Major. Therefore the energy in LANXESS Arena will tilt heavily in their favour from the opening pistol round.

Team Liquid, meanwhile, walk into Cologne carrying real psychological baggage. They crashed out of IEM Atlanta 2026 in the group stage. After dropping the opener to Astralis, they were dismantled 9-13 and 6-13 by GamerLegion in a clean 0-2 series. IGL siuhy was candid in his post-event interview, admitting the team is going through “a very tough moment” and pointing to the widening gap between practice form and official match performance.

The star power is undeniably there. NAF remains one of the most reliable two-way players in North American CS. EliGE’s return brought aggression back to the roster. The mid-season swap of NertZ for malbsMd added a creative spark in mid-round calling. However, with Liquid sitting at HLTV ranking #45 and BIG riding genuine momentum into a Bo1 opener at home, the community lean has been clear. BIG enter as favourites in the betting markets. A Liquid upset is possible but improbable given the current form gap.

GamerLegion enters as Stage 1’s top dog

GamerLegion sit at the top of most Stage 1 power rankings, and the gap is not subtle. They reached the grand final at IEM Atlanta 2026 before falling in five maps. REZ has been in arguably the best form of his career across the last two tournament cycles. Therefore their opening match against NRG looks like one of the cleanest 3-0 picks on the day 1 card.

NRG have historically struggled against top-tier European opposition. Bo1 maps amplify that gap because there is no room to study and adjust between sides. As a result, GamerLegion are heavy favourites to set the tone for what could be a flawless 3-0 Stage 1 run.

The other storylines to track

B8 vs TYLOO: B8 have lost some of their shine since their 2025 highs, but they still outclass the bottom end of the Asian region on paper. S1ren is reportedly missing the first day of action, which complicates the pick slightly. Therefore a clean win is expected but not guaranteed.

MIBR vs THUNDER dOWNUNDER: MIBR’s consistency at this tier should be enough. The Oceanic region simply does not get the practice volume against European opposition that MIBR brings to every event. Insani has shown he can be an X-factor on his day, and this looks like one of the safer 3-0 picks for the full Stage 1 run.

HEROIC vs Sharks: HEROIC are the most volatile Tier 1 pick of the day. They looked poor at PGL Astana 2026 on key maps like Mirage and Inferno. Since then they crashed out of Stake Ranked Episode 2 with losses to 9z and Ninjas in Pyjamas. Specifically, the team is wobbling at exactly the wrong moment. Still, the gap between HEROIC and Sharks should be enough to secure round 1, even on a bad day.

BetBoom vs Gaimin Gladiators: BetBoom are the highest-rated team in this matchup on paper, and Gaimin Gladiators have struggled for consistency in 2026. Should be a comfortable opener for BetBoom if their CIS lineup shows up at last year’s level.

M80 vs Lynn Vision and SINNERS vs FlyQuest: These are the more open Bo1s on the card. M80 and FlyQuest both come in as slight favourites, but Bo1 variance at this tier is genuinely high. Expect at least one of these matches to deliver an upset.

What is different about this Major

IEM Cologne 2026 is the first Major to use a fully best-of-three format in Stage 3. Previously, even Major Stage 3 matches included Bo1 group matches. As a result, this year teams get a much better chance to demonstrate their actual level across multiple maps once they reach the back end of the tournament. That format change rewards depth over coin-flip variance.

Furthermore, the new token-based Major Shop launched on May 22 has completely reshaped how stickers and capsules work at this event. The traditional capsule drops are gone. Instead, fans can browse 772 individual stickers and buy what they want directly. We covered the full shift in our breakdown of Valve killing CS2 capsules. For Cologne collectors, the new system means hunting specific player autographs and team logos becomes a different game entirely.

Team Vitality enter as defending champions of both 2025 Majors (Austin and Budapest), but they do not play Stage 1. The top 8 seeded teams skip directly into Stage 2. Therefore Vitality, Spirit, Falcons, MOUZ, FaZe, NAVI, paiN and Astralis all wait in the wings while Stage 1 sorts itself out.

How to watch IEM Cologne Major 2026 day 1

The full event streams on ESL’s official Counter-Strike channels on Twitch, YouTube and Kick. Twitch also runs a B-stream for group stage matches, giving fans two simultaneous broadcasts to follow when multiple matches overlap. Round 1 kicks off at 12:30 CEST today, with the final Round 2 match wrapping around 21:30 CEST.

For Danish viewers, that means matches start at 12:30 local time and run through the evening. Perfect timing if you want to ease into the Major on a Tuesday afternoon.

How I see the bracket

Eight teams advance, eight go home. My current read on the eight survivors of Stage 1 looks like this: GamerLegion, MIBR, BIG, BetBoom, B8, HEROIC, MOUZ-adjacent picks like FlyQuest, and one wildcard out of the Lynn Vision or Sharks pool. Cleanest 3-0 sweeps probably come from GamerLegion and MIBR. Meanwhile the most painful exits will likely be HEROIC if their current form spiral continues, and possibly Liquid if BIG bury them on home soil in the opener.

The real story of Stage 1 is whether the favourites convert their seeding into clean runs, or whether the Swiss-system chaos delivers another set of surprises like we saw at IEM Atlanta. Bo1 at Major level is brutal. Even the best team in the world has lost a Bo1 to a Tier 2 squad at some point in their career. As a result, expect drama, expect upsets, and expect at least one team you assumed was safe to find themselves in the elimination bracket by day 3.

The Cathedral is open. Let the Major begin.
