NHL Betting in Canada 2026: Markets, Odds and Strategy
NHL betting is the most popular way Canadians bet on hockey, from the puck line to player props. This guide explains NHL betting markets, how hockey odds and margins work, where Canadians can bet legally by province, and what to look for in a sportsbook for hockey.
How we score
Hockey is Canada's betting sport. The NHL season runs from October to June, with the Stanley Cup playoffs from April, and every game offers dozens of markets.
Where Canadians can bet on the NHL
Single-game betting has been legal in Canada since August 2021. In Ontario, sportsbooks registered with iGaming Ontario take bets; in other provinces, provincial lottery sites such as PlayAlberta, Espacejeux, PlayNow and Proline are the regulated options. We'll add a ranking of sportsbooks for hockey once our list of regulated sportsbooks is complete; our betting sites Canada page covers the current options.
NHL betting markets
| Market | What you bet on | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Moneyline | Who wins, including overtime and shootout | The simplest bet |
| Puck line | Winner with a ±1.5 goal handicap | Favourite must win by 2+ |
| Totals | Over/under total goals, often 5.5 or 6.5 | Overtime usually counts |
| 60-minute line | Result after regulation, draw possible | Three outcomes |
| Player props | Goals, points, shots, saves | Check rules for scratched players |
| Futures | Stanley Cup, division winners, awards | Higher margins |
How hockey odds work
A moneyline of -150 means you stake C$150 to win C$100; +130 means a C$100 stake wins C$130. In decimal odds, those are 1.67 and 2.30. To find the bookmaker's margin, add the inverse of both sides: 1/1.67 + 1/2.30 ≈ 103.4%, a margin of about 3.4%.
Tips for betting the NHL
- Check starting goalies: a backup goalie changes a game's odds.
- Back-to-backs matter: teams on the second night of a back-to-back often perform worse.
- Shop for the puck line: prices differ between sportsbooks.
- Watch totals in the playoffs: scoring often drops.
- Avoid long parlays: each leg adds margin.

NHL futures
| Market | What you bet on | When prices are best |
|---|---|---|
| Stanley Cup winner | The champion | Before the season or after injuries to rivals |
| Conference winner | Each conference | Mid-season |
| Division winner | Each division | Early season |
| Awards (Hart, Vezina, Norris) | Individual awards | Early, before narratives form |
Futures tie up your money for months and carry higher margins than single games. Keep stakes small.
Canadian teams
Seven NHL teams are Canadian: Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. Local money tends to back home teams, which can shorten their prices. Comparing prices across several sportsbooks matters most on Canadian teams for exactly that reason.
Live NHL betting
Live markets update after every goal and penalty. Power plays shift totals and next-goal prices sharply, and late in close games teams pull the goalie, which increases scoring in the final minutes. If you bet live, decide your stake before the game and avoid chasing losses during it.
Common NHL betting mistakes
- Ignoring the starting goalie: a backup in net changes the price more than most news.
- Overlooking schedule spots: back-to-backs and long road trips affect performance.
- Treating the puck line like a spread: empty-net goals change how often favourites cover.
- Chasing in-game: live prices move fast after goals; set limits beforehand.
NHL betting glossary
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Moneyline | Bet on the winner, overtime included |
| Puck line | ±1.5 goal handicap |
| Regulation (60-minute) line | Result after three periods, draw possible |
| Grand salami | Total goals across all games on a day |
| Empty-net goal | Goal scored after the trailing team pulls its goalie |
NHL playoff betting
The Stanley Cup playoffs run from April to June in best-of-seven series. Besides single games, bookmakers offer series prices, correct series score (such as 4–2) and series total games. Home ice matters more in the playoffs, and scoring often drops as defences tighten.
Player props explained
| Prop | What you bet on |
|---|---|
| Anytime goal scorer | A player scores at any point |
| Points | Goals plus assists over or under a line |
| Shots on goal | A player's shots over or under a line |
| Goalie saves | A goalie's saves over or under a line |
Check the rules for scratched players: most props are void if the player doesn't dress.
Moneyline vs puck line
The moneyline is the simplest NHL bet, but heavy favourites pay little. The puck line gives a better price on the favourite in exchange for needing a two-goal win, and empty-net goals late in games make two-goal margins more common than many bettors expect. Underdogs at +1.5 win the bet if they lose by one goal or win outright.
Totals and overtime
NHL totals are usually set at 5.5 or 6.5 goals. Most bookmakers count overtime and shootouts in the total, and a shootout winner counts as one goal for the winning team. If you want to bet on regulation time only, look for 60-minute markets, which settle on the score after three periods.
