Heretics VCT EMEA 2026 champions. Sentences like that one have a different weight when the team in question has spent years losing grand finals they were supposed to win. Sunday night at the Riot Games Arena in Berlin changed everything for Team Heretics. They beat Team Vitality 3-2 after going down 0-2 in the series, claimed their first ever VCT trophy, and finally killed the “second place curse” that had hung over the organisation for two and a half years.

This wasn’t supposed to happen. Vitality entered the grand final with a 2-0 map veto advantage and the confidence of a team that hadn’t dropped a meaningful series in weeks. They got off to exactly the start they wanted. Then Heretics started believing they could win, and the entire arena could feel the energy shift.

How the Heretics VCT EMEA 2026 grand final unfolded

Vitality controlled Breeze from the opening rounds. Their pacing was sharper, their site executes faster, and Heretics couldn’t find a way to slow them down. Eventually, the map ended 13-10 in Vitality’s favour and felt closer than the scoreline suggested. Throughout the entire map, Vitality were always in control.

The second map went to Vitality the same way. Aggressive early-round pressure, confident site takes, clean defensive holds. Meanwhile, Heretics weren’t winning enough opening duels, and the rounds were going one direction. By the end of map two, Vitality were one map away from the trophy. Indeed, the Berlin crowd was starting to accept what looked like an inevitable result.

Then Heretics found something. Map three opened with the same Vitality intensity, but the Heretics response was different. Suddenly, they started winning the small fights. Additionally, they identified weaknesses in Vitality’s defensive structure and exploited them through better utility usage. As a result, the map flipped halfway through, and Heretics took it.

Map four was the turning point of the entire series. Specifically, benjyfishy delivered the best individual half of his season. Furthermore, Wo0t was hitting shots he hadn’t hit all month. On the other hand, Vitality’s response was inconsistent. Sayonara in particular couldn’t find his shots, and the rounds kept slipping away. Eventually, Heretics tied the series 2-2 and forced a decider.

Haven was the most intense map of the entire VCT EMEA Stage 1 calendar. Both teams traded rounds through the first half. Neither side could establish economic control. As the pressure built into the late stages, Heretics looked calmer in the critical moments. They won clutches. They adapted faster to Vitality’s reads. They secured Haven 13-9 and completed one of the most memorable reverse sweeps in VCT history.

The curse breakers find redemption

The personal storyline of this final belongs to a group of players who had been here before, multiple times, and lost. Indeed, Heretics had reached VCT grand finals over the past two years and lost every single one. Eventually, the “second place curse” had become a meme in the EMEA community. Throughout those years, players on this roster had been heartbreakingly close to international trophies without crossing the finish line.

Berlin was different. benjyfishy was in tears on stage after the trophy lift. Wo0t finally got his first VCT title. koshmaras anchored the late-series adaptation that won them the trophy. RieNs and Boo rounded out a roster that had grown into this moment.

For Heretics, the Heretics VCT EMEA 2026 trophy is more than a Stage 1 title. It’s validation. The patience, the failed grand finals, the criticism, all of it was leading to this moment. The curse is dead.

Vitality’s brutal collapse

For Vitality, this loss is going to take time to process. The “superteam” that had been talked about all offseason hit a ceiling. After dominating the upper bracket and leading the grand final 2-0, they couldn’t close out a series against a Heretics squad that should have been beaten in three maps.

Sayonara posted on Twitter after the match: “2-3 vs @TeamHeretics felt like shit played like shit mb happens.” The honesty is appreciated, but it confirms what the gameplay showed. Vitality’s roster has serious issues with closing out series under pressure, and those issues need to be addressed before Masters Toronto.

The good news for Vitality is that they had already secured their Masters Toronto qualification before the grand final. The top three EMEA teams qualify, and the three representatives are Heretics, Vitality, and FUT Esports. Heretics take the first seed and the direct path to the playoff stage.

Vitality’s nightmare weekend across two games

There’s a broader storyline here that goes beyond VALORANT. Sunday was a disaster weekend for the entire Team Vitality organisation. While the VALORANT roster was losing the VCT EMEA Stage 1 grand final 3-2 to Heretics, the CS2 roster was being eliminated in the semi-finals of IEM Atlanta by NAVI. Two of Vitality’s flagship esports projects lost their biggest matches of the weekend within hours of each other.

For an organisation that has built its entire brand around dominance in 2026, the timing couldn’t be worse. Both rosters now have serious questions to answer before their next major tournaments.

What Heretics VCT EMEA 2026 means for Masters Toronto

Masters Toronto runs from June 5 to 21. The top three teams from each region’s Stage 1 playoffs qualify, with the first seed getting a direct path to the playoff stage of the event. That bypass matters a lot. First seeds get to choose their opponents in the upper bracket quarter-finals, giving them strategic control over the early bracket setup.

The Heretics VCT EMEA 2026 first seed means they have time to refine their structure before facing the best teams from VCT Americas, Pacific, and China. Vitality and FUT Esports will both start in the Swiss bracket and have to work their way up.

The other major EMEA storyline heading into Stage 2 is the Karmine Corp disaster. KC went winless in Stage 1 (0-5), head coach Engh stepped down, and assistant coach ZE1SH is taking over before Stage 2 begins in July. KC have a lot of rebuilding to do.
