Overwatch is bringing big changes to the game with plenty of new Heroes, fresh game modes, and major Blizzcon reveals. Now, another interview has revealed more insight into the title’s 5v5 and 6v6 queues and confirmed that Drive Signatures may become collectibles in the future. Here’s everything to know.
On September 24,2026, Overwatch Game Director Aaron Keller spoke with content creator bunnimoni to answer community questions. The pair discussed Overwatch’s game modes: while 5v5 has been the title’s default since 2022, the player base has consistently asked for 6v6 queues to return.
Part of the push stems from tank mains, who face more individual pressure since the changes. Other users in different roles miss the mode for its nostalgia factor, and its more team-based outcomes.
While speaking to bunnimoni, Keller confirmed that “we feel like the right way to operate Overwatch going forward is to support at least 5v5 and 6v6.” In other words, the team believes both game modes can and should coexist.
In addition, Keller stated that recent tests had proven there was ‘enough interest’ to sustain 5v5 and 6v6 together. The game will not need to collapse into one global queue.
This is a marked contrast from previous community predictions, indicating the game’s player count in these modes is healthier than fans thought.
Overwatch’s players eat up the game’s Drive events, where they can earn animated nameplate ‘Drive Signatures’ by queueing. Every Drive signature is unique, with different colors and VFX. However, they usually disappear after the event is over, and there’s no way to keep them in your inventory.
All that may change soon: Aaron Keller stated the Overwatch team is considering letting users collect and change their Drive signatures. Though he cautioned the decision is a ‘maybe’ instead of an outright ‘yes,’ Keller confirmed “we’re talking about it internally.”
“We always say that we want to make the game that players want to play,” Keller said. He reiterated that the Activision Blizzard team has heard player feedback and knows how popular the drives are.
Keller predicted that big changes would arrive for comp “as we hit the end of this year, and probably more towards Season 1 of next year.” He spoke at length about how Drive events connect to the game’s Matchmaking algorithms, which he called one of the ‘most complicated’ processes to adjust.
bunnimoni asked Keller why some Overwatch Heroes get more skins than others. For example, Mercy and Kiriko usually dominate skin launches. Kiriko has over 40 in-game cosmetics, while other Heroes notoriously get left in the dust. Until recently, Venture was one such unlucky soul who had almost no skin options.
Keller offered a realistic answer: the Overwatch team prioritizes its skin releases based on which ones have the highest projected sales. “We need to pick Heroes based on how well they can support the business,” he said.
“There [are] a lot of different goals and values we have when we develop our skins,” he stated. Keller mentioned the Overwatch devs have three main priorities with skin releases:
When it comes to themed sets, “some of [Overwatch’s] Heroes are more versatile than others.” It’s perhaps easier to integrate simpler sihlouettes or flashier abilities into a set.
Keller said a Hero’s popularity directly influences how well a skin performs, so the team tries to select more common options. He called it ‘overwhelmingly the most important factor’ in sales.
Indeed, Overwatch’s skin bundles have brought in significant revenue in the past. Though Blizzard has not confirmed, viral internet rumors earlier this year claimed the game’s LE SSERAFIM skins (specifically the one for Kiriko) brought in enough revenue to make a significant impact on its future. The LE SSERAFIM bundle has had several re-releases, with LE SSERAFIM Wave 3 just launching recently.
