A new Storm skin has electrified the Marvel Rivals community, and players are abuzz. Marvel Rivals has just apologized for the cosmetic’s poor execution, promising free upgrades and new options moving forward. Here’s an explainer.
Marvel Rivals Releases Storm Sacred Skies Swimsuit Skin
When leaks revealed Marvel Rivals would release a summer swimsuit special skin for Storm (try saying that ten times fast), Duelist mains were excited. Despite having a low current pick rate, she’s been prominent in the game’s meta at several points (2024-2025 players will remember just how menacing she was to face off against). In addition, Storm notoriously has very few cosmetic options, so this would be one of her first skins with hype behind it.
The original skin design was quite basic, but fans were holding out hope that it would be Legendary tier, one of the highest possible cosmetic classes. There was much excitement and buzz in the weeks before it arrived.
We got an official reveal on August 12, 2026, but the new Storm skin was not at all what fans had expected, and the community went into uproar.
The Storm Swimsuit Skin Controversy Explained
The player base was not pleased with Storm’s new skin release. Every other summer swimsuit skin is Legendary tier. However, fans noticed that Storm’s was the only Epic level in the set, and she had no Ultimate VFX changes.
In addition, many comments felt Storm’s swimsuit design was extremely basic compared to other Heroes, who have motifs that match their character and added bits and bobs like bracelets, hats, and cover-ups. Plus instead of a third recolor chroma, Storm just has an accessory toggle. The toggle additions are very minor, and they don’t change the skin a whole lot.
Storm has a current pick rate of about 3% (according to rivalstracker), but her fanbase is dedicated and showed up in full force. Players were wondering why the X-Men icon was receiving different treatment. One user pointed out, “She controls the weather and y’all couldn’t think of anything for her ult VFX?”
“Just say you hate this lady and move on,” another wrote.
One netizen posted a meme of the SpongeBob real estate fish (real ones know) and said the Marvel Rivals team had “played in her face.”
User @DOMOMMYNA recieved 14,000 likes and 444,000 views in a reply that went viral, saying “The first female summer skin to be Epic and she’s the only black woman in the game.”
Marvel Rivals Apologizes, Adds Free Upgrades
A day later, Marvel Rivals posted an official statement addressing the elephant in the room. The studio started by saying, “We’ve seen the community’s feedback regarding today’s announcement of Storm’s most recent costume as well as the overall sentiment towards her cosmetic options. We hear your passion and want to share our plan going forward with the community.”
Marvel Rivals announced that it would upgrade the Storm skin to Legendary for free. In addition, the dev team promised to add a new lobby animation and an MVP animation. The skin will stay at the same 16 USD price, so the refresh won’t affect its cost.
In addition, the studio confirmed that “Players who purchase the costume will receive a free Ultimate effect upgrade.”
There will also be “more Storm Legendary tier Costumes coming, so please keep your eyes on the skies over the rest of the year.“
The statement closed by reminding players that, while the team is always open to hear feedback, they encourage the community to stay positive and not harass any specific staff members. Marvel Rivals also noted, “the upgrades will take some time, please be patient, as we are already hard at work on the above.“
Community Reactions
Players seemed grateful for the changes, appreciating the team’s swift response. Sentinels pro aramori popped in to say, “nice.” However, some netizens did question the message’s tone in its ending: @sxarlight asked, “was it harassment or pointing out how the Black characters are treated?”
A horde of gif reactions followed.
Players are asking for other Heroes with few skin options to recieve the same treatment. Human Torch mains are still waiting for a truly GOATed skin option. Others are asking Marvel Rivals to make the same upgrades to Blade and Black Panther ‘expeditiously’.
If nothing else, the situation seems to have ignited Marvel Rivals’ motivation for keeping cosmetics high-quality. The community is keeping a close watch on future releases.
