Fortnite Now Has a Pirate Token That Makes all Shop Items Free

Fortnite Treasure Hunters is here, and players are discovering some unexpected surprises from the mini season. Alongside the One Piece collab and new cosmetics, a Pirate Token lets squad members unlock shop content for free items. Here’s a quick explainer on how exactly it works.
What is the Pirate Token in Fortnite? Free Shop Items
The Pirate Token just arrived in Fortnite on November 1, as part of the Treasure Hunters mini season. This obtainable token, which looks like a gold coin with a skull and crossbones icon on it, is extremely rare. Any players who get it can instantly unlock 14 days of shop content for free.
Fortnite describes the item as follows:
“Activate the Pirate Shop to plunder the Fortnite Item Shop for 14 days from time of activation. While the Pirate Shop is activated, items sold for V-Bucks in the Fortnite Item Shop will be available to claim for free. Real money offers, gifting and passes levels/rewards are excluded, and you can only claim one free sidekick you do not already own. You can activate the Pirate Shop twice: once in 2026 and once in 2027. This treasure is not transferable.”
What Items Can You Get with the Pirate Token?
If you have the Pirate Token, you can use it to unlock all items in the Item Shop for the next 14 days for free. You can activate the token at any time, so you can strategize for the items you want.
There are some exceptions. You cannot use the Pirate Token on the Battlepass, Gifting, or other exclusive non-shop collections. Also, you can only use the Pirate Token to get one new Sidekick.
How to Get Free Items with the Pirate Shop in Fortnite
Fortnite’s new Treasure Hunters mini season includes a new type of chest. The Treasure-Hunt Chest has a bright golden glow and a skull with crossbones on it. You can find it anywhere around the Battle Royale map, and it gives you a variety of rewards.
Whenever you open the Treasure-Hunt Chest, you have a small chance to roll the Pirate Token. Note again that this is an EXTREMELY rare item, so you’ll have to put in some serious playtime to grab it.
The chest will give you two Pirate Tokens at once: one for 2026, and one for 2027. This means you can access the Fortnite Pirate Shop twice.
Also, if you find the Pirate Tokens chest, your teammates and your entire squad all get access to the Pirate Shop too.
How to Unlock the Fortnite Pirate Shop
So, to summarize:
- Queue into Battle Royale Fortnite games.
- Look for chests.
- Find a Treasure-Hunt Chest and open it. There’s a very small chance you receive two Pirate Tokens.
- Go to the Item Shop with the Pirate Token.
- A pop-up will appear. Click ‘Activate Now.’
- All Fortnite Item Shop cosmetics will be free for the next 14 days.
- Purchase cosmetics the same way you normally would. They won’t cost any V-Bucks.
Where is the Fortnite Pirate Token Chest?
The Pirate Token Chest is randomized, so it can spawn anywhere on the map. However, some netizens are claiming they have better success in the Lantern Landing area on the Battle Royale island.
Fortnite Pirate Tokens Expiration Date
The two Pirate Tokens don’t last forever. They are limited-time.
- 2026 Pirate Token: Works until Wednesday, December 16, 2026 at 7 PM. EST.
- 2027 Pirate Token: Works until December 17, 2027.
