LCS Promotion Tournament: Five Teams, One Slot, and a Business Model Worth More Than the Trophy

Five teams. Seven days. One slot in the LCS for 2027.

The LCS Promotion Tournament opens on 5 October, and the prize is worth considerably more than a trophy. Whoever wins takes the LCS Guest Slot, which comes with an operating stipend, access to the Global Revenue Pool from LoL Esports in-game content sales, and the same business model benefits Tier-1 organisations receive.

That last part is the story. These teams are not playing for a season of exposure. They are playing for a functioning esports business.

Disguised Have to Win It All Over Again

Disguised hold the Guest Slot after fighting off every challenger in 2026. Riot has given them a bracket advantage this year, and nothing else.

There is no automatic requalification. Defend the slot or lose it.

The other four seats go to the top two teams from the NACL and the top two from the Liga Regional Norte, which puts two North American sides and two from Latin America in the bracket alongside them.

Every series is a best-of-five. Riot is running Full Fearless with First Selection, so champions get locked out as a series progresses and no team can lean on one comfort pick across five games. Roster depth matters more here than in almost any other format in the region.

Disguised Drew the Easier Half

Look at what the bracket actually does with the seeds.

The two regional champions, NACL Seed #1 and LRN Seed #1, play each other on day two. One of them loses and drops straight into the lower bracket before the tournament is three days old.

Disguised, meanwhile, skip the play-in entirely and enter on day three against whichever second seed survives A1. They avoid a regional champion in their opening series and get an extra day of rest while everyone else plays.

That is what a bracket advantage looks like in practice. Disguised still have to win, but the path in front of them is materially softer than the one facing either league winner.

The Grand Final Has No Reset

One detail from the bracket deserves attention. A5 on 12 October is a single best-of-five between the upper bracket winner and the lower bracket survivor. There is no bracket reset.

So a team that loses once on day two can still take the slot by winning one series on the final day. The upper bracket route buys you rest and fewer games, not a safety net in the final itself.

The Missing Day

Nothing happens on 11 October, and that is not an oversight.

The first six days run remotely. The Grand Finals then move to a live audience in Mexico City. The missing day is travel.

The Finals Go to Mexico City

Riot has partnered with LYON to produce the tournament, coming straight off the LCS Homegrounds. LYON won both the LCS Lock-In and the Spring split in 2026, so one of the league’s strongest organisations is running the event that decides who joins it.

The Grand Finals take place at the Arena Esports Stadium at CINEMEX Artz Pedregal in Mexico City. Last year the whole event ran remotely, so a live crowd for the deciding series is new.

One detail deserves attention. During the remote stage, Riot will fly LRN teams to Mexico City where necessary and provide hotels and practice rooms for the duration of the tournament. That is a competitive integrity measure rather than a perk. Remote play across Latin America means inconsistent connections, and Riot is spending money so the bracket gets decided by skill instead of ping.

What the Winner Actually Gets

The LCS Guest Slot grants the right to compete in the LCS and, through it, the path to First Stand, MSI and Worlds.

The financial package matters just as much:

• An operating stipend
• Access to the Global Revenue Pool from LoL Esports in-game content sales
• The same business model benefits Tier-1 teams receive

For a tier-two organisation, that is the difference between subsidising a roster out of pocket and running a team that pays for itself. Seven days of best-of-fives is a short window to decide something that large.

The WSCI Gives Tier 2 an International Stage

Riot has also launched the World Star Challengers Invitational, a new international tier-two tournament, and the Americas get three qualification spots.

The NACL Summer Split champion takes North America’s place. Latin America and Brazil receive one each.

Riot is covering the logistics entirely for qualifying teams, including practice rooms, flights and hotels. For tier-two rosters, travel costs have historically been the reason international opportunities do not happen, so removing them changes who can realistically compete.

Broadcast works differently here too. Rather than a single central stream, Riot is running coverage through local co-streamers so fans can follow their own regional team. The WSCI begins on 20 September.

Why These Two Events Matter Together

Riot spent 2026 rebuilding the LCS as a standalone league after the LTA was discontinued. The tier-two structure underneath it got rebuilt at the same time.

The LCS Promotion Tournament is where that structure gets tested. Five teams, one slot, and a winner who steps into a business model rather than just a bracket.
