Three Teams Came to Malta Mid-Rebuild. The Quarter-Finals Answered Two of Them.

BLAST sat down with a player from Liquid, MOUZ and Spirit in Malta this week. Read the three interviews back to back and the same conversation runs through all of them. A team in pieces. Putting itself back together. Unsure how fast that should be allowed to happen.

Then the bracket ran. The BLAST Bounty Season 2 semi-finals line-up settled two of those arguments before anyone had time to publish a follow-up.

Spirit said the timing was right. Then they proved it.

tN1R made the boldest case of the three. Spirit have spent months with their coaching situation in flux. S0tF1k stood in first. Then came IEM Cologne with no coach at all, where they still reached the semi-finals. hally returned once his health allowed it.

tN1R described the no-coach stretch as looser and lower-pressure, with the team leaning on individual play. hally’s return brought back structure and team management.

Asked what he expected from the season, he said Spirit have no formal expectations. Then he made the claim anyway. He told BLAST this is “a good time for us to win trophies and maybe even have an era”.

That is a large thing to say after losing a Major semi-final. Twenty-four hours later, Spirit beat Liquid 2-0. Falcons, FURIA and Vitality had already gone out, so Spirit are now the biggest name left in the draw.

MOUZ got the endorsement, then earned it

The sharpest line in tN1R’s interview was not about Spirit. He was asked which team outside the top five could force its way in. He named MOUZ, and pointed at their players and their structure.

MOUZ beat 3DMAX on map three the same day. They are into the last four in their first event with this roster.

xelex described the least glamorous version of a rebuild. Asked how he had found the step up from MOUZ NXT, he told BLAST “I don’t think I had the most confidence in the first few months.” He kept his opinions to himself instead of speaking up.

He also lost the positions he knew best. In his old role, a good game from him usually meant a win. Now entire halves can pass without him touching a round. His stated ceiling is top 20, and he will not put a timeline on it.

Two players from different orgs read MOUZ the same way. One from inside, one from across the server. That is worth more than either interview alone.

Liquid’s argument is the one still open

JT arrived in Malta as a first-time IGL at a big organisation. Jorko came in as a new AWPer. They beat Vitality and G2 in the online stage almost immediately.

He was careful about what that meant. Both wins came from gameplans that worked from round one. The real test arrives when a gameplan does not.

He also said the thing most new signings avoid. This is not the Liquid that won a Grand Slam. Getting them back there is the job. Asked whether complacency was a risk, he told BLAST that “we need to not get complacent based on early results”.

Spirit then beat them 2-0. That is the exact test JT described, and the exact result his own caution predicted. Liquid leave with a strong debut and no answer yet.

What the BLAST Bounty Season 2 semi-finals actually decide

Spirit and MOUZ are through. FaZe play The MongolZ and paiN play Astralis today, both Friday afternoon CEST, to fill the other half.

Spirit are favourites now by elimination as much as by form. Every other team carrying a $60,000 bounty had already fallen when the playoffs began. Winning from that position proves less than it looks. Losing from it would say a great deal.

MOUZ have simpler maths. A top four in the first event with a rebuilt roster is what xelex said he wanted. It arrived faster than he was willing to predict.
